I just found out my 2nd cousin just graduated from U of P when I got a notice in the mail. I had no idea or I would have talked him out of it. I called him up and he was super excited, so I stayed positive and gave tons of congrats (which he deserves). He started right out of high school and he mailed out grad cards when he was done, which I thought was odd, but is it? To him this is a normal thing, is this a gen gap issue? To people in their early 20's is this normal? He told me he had his ring ordered for U of P and I got to thinking has anyone else ordered a college ring for an online degree?

Before anyone asks, he has already received an internship for At&t for two years making good money in their new world market development, so a U of P degree will get you a job!

  2. I'm 23 and to me that's pretty much normal. The majority of my high school classmates did exactly what he did (Graduated HS-->College and mailed a TON of grad cards). I have heard of only a few getting the class rings though. Congrats on the job.

Enh, I might have gotten a Charter Oak State College ring if I didn't have four kids to feed. But when I graduated, I just Facebooked it. I mean, I couldn't be bothered to go to my own graduation, so I couldn't have expected anyone else to make a fuss over it.

I guess I've been figuring all this time that when I finally finish a doctorate that I'll walk the stage and do all that "marking the event" kind of stuff. :)

College rings are fun. If you can't afford one when you graduate you can always get one later. Many people wear them proudly throughout their careers.

I plan to purchase a college ring from my Graduate program. I wouldn't personally want one from my Undergrad but thats just me. If your cousin is stopping at his undergrad why not wear a ring displaying his achievement with pride.

I actually ordered a CCU ring. I did not have the degree put on the ring since I ordered it when I finished the BS and had already paid for the MBA and had just started classes. I thought it would be a "combo" ring. I wore it about 10 times and it just sits in my drawer. It is a nice silver signet ring.

I plan on buying one when I'm done. I want mine to look like a Super Bowl ring. :veryhappy:

I did not get a ring for HS nor will I get a ring for college. I don't see the point, really, and you really look quite silly wearing one.

You do make a good point. I just looked at class rings and they all look corny. Maybe I'll buy me a watch instead.

I agree - I don't even wear a wedding ring - In my job rings are often not allowed in the workplace (as are many other items including cell phones).

I guess if you're going to dish out tens of thousands of dollars for a piece of paper that says you completed a degree, you might as well go all out and get a ring to complement your shiny seal of accomplishment

No, but seriously, it's your money. Who am I to tell you how to spend it?

I'm soon to be 49 years old and I just ordered my MBA class ring. My MBA was completed by night school 18 years ago. Does that make me abnormal?

I wear two rings, both gifts from my bride. I did not get a ring for my BA, but I have both a master's and doc ring. They are the only rings I own or wear. I have worn them every day since I received them and I rarely take them off.

Getting a college ring is a rite of passage, particularly at the Bachelors level. Even West Pointers are known as "ring knockers" after they graduate with a Bachelors degree. When they visit each others offices, they knock on the door with their ring, thus making a unique tapping noise i.e. ring knocking.

Certainly could be true. Maybe more of an East Coast thing? Maybe not, but I have never known anyone to buy a college ring. Many, many buying a high school ring.

YOU might look silly, but it'll dwarf in comparison to the wrap I'm having put on my car when I graduate. I might even have all of my shirts embroidered. :bling:

Oh and if I ever get back to my ALM at HES, I'm buying sweatpants with the word H-A-R-V-A-R-D across my senior citizen azz.

It might be more of an East Coast thing, I don't know, but it seems to me that it's definitely a GUY thing. The vast majority of the people that I see wearing school rings are guys. It's a little counterintuitive because women typically wear most of the jewelry. I don't wear mine often but when I do I wear it on a chain, as a necklace. It gets much more attention that way.
