    Hi everyone....

I have been scouring the forum and have seen numerous posts from members who currently teach as adjunct professors.

I am self-employed and have always had an interest in teaching, so I am heading back to school to get my master's and eventually doctorate degree.

My bachelor's degree is in Business Administration.... and since I own a business, that seems like the logical academic path for me. BUT, I hated nearly every business class and I have no interest in teaching this subject.

Can anyone tell me which degrees are in the highest demand? I am most interested in history, but I read on this forum that this area is in low demand. I am also interested in government... and my undergrad minor was in Sociology. I also have extensive work experience in the computer industry.

If anyone could give me an idea of what job openings they see the most, it would really help!!!

    Thank you!!

Welcome to Degree Info!!! Unfortunately, judging from my own experience, demand is fairly low for adjuncts in most disciplines. Finance, accounting and math are the only areas that are open at all. Someone has recently reported that math adjuncts are in pretty good demand. I have no empirical evidence to support this other than my own personal experience.

I do not recommend picking a graduate degree based on the premise that there might be a part time job available down the road.

Pick something that is of interest to you.

That's why I really want something I enjoy like history, govt, poli sci, and international affairs... but from what I have been reading on this forum, these areas seem to be pretty full. In a perfect world I would just follow my passion and get an MA in History and a PhD in military history.... but I also want to pick a field that MAY be useful should I ever want to use it. If that makes sense...

It is important to get a degree that you are interested in. But, I have to disagree. There are adjunct jobs out there. There are literally hundreds of online schools and one has to be persistant to find the positions. I've been hired at 6 online schools in the last two months. I teach criminal justice and English. I am planning on returning to get a PhD but I haven't yet found a subject. If I were you, I'd choose a field I was interested in and get the degree. Find a job teaching on ground and after about six months apply everywhere. You'll get bites eventually. Also, many programs don't have history classes, that is why you don't see them. However, business and health courses are huge. Good luck.

    Thanks adamjlaw,

I appreciate the insight. I noticed on the higher ed jobs site there were quite a few posts for business and English... and also quite a few in govt. I know these change often... that's why I was asking those of you "in the know". I appreciate the advice!
