Now here's the other half of my question. If you were a young person, just starting out in life and you had $100K to use to establish yourself, what would you do with it? Would invest in education or do something entirely different?

It is really hard to answer that question. I would say, everyone has different interests, talents or personality traits. The money would be best spent in developing these , e.g. if someone is passionated/talented in a certain kind of sports, arts, etc. These should be in the center and education modeled around that.

Another aspect I would consider is that some core elements, such as writing or public speaking/arguing/negotiating are often overlooked and polishing up these skills can help a person grow substantially towards a strong personality. Combining these "frontend" skills with an academic background should make a quite good "life insurance".

I would go to the dentist and have a field day. :toothache:

Then, I'd buy a neat little condo or somethingerother. Nothing too fancy or full scale, just a place for myself and a hypothetical someone else who may or may not one day exist :smlove2:

Then, well, I'd pretty much be all set, so long as I kept getting hours from my various sources of income

FYI, the American Opportunity Tax Credit has been extended to 2012! This means that your daughter (and anyone else, for that matter) is covered for $4k or more over the next two years with college expenses. Boomshakalaka! I'll post more info in a thread tomorrow.

If we are just dreaming, I would buy a condo somewhere in Mexico next to a great surf spot, maybe Chacala in Nayarit, Mexico, and forget this rat race.

    - Invest it
    - Enlist in the Air Force and stay until retirement (20+ years)
    - Retire for good in my early 40s with 20+ years of investments

This might be the best idea I have heard yet.

Actually, that's not too bad of an idea. Homes, and living expenses, in some countries (ex. the Dominican Republic) are so cheap, one could buy a home and retire super early even in one of the more developed cities.

Puede que seria una buena idea que considerar para mi futuro. :scratchchin:

EDIT: Then again, maybe your old age is best spent in a place where the healthcare system cures more people than it infects. I guess that scratches La Republica Dominicana off of my list.

Si, es una idea buena. Pero no haga enfermo. I hope that makes sense. I know a bunch of Spanish words and don't know much grammar or even spelling. (Gee, thanks Rosetta Stone)

I would go to well known state university(University of Florida, University of Illinois, Penn State, UNC-Chapel Hills, UCLA, UC-Berkley, and etc) for a BS, invest the rest, then join the Marine Corps Officer program.

I would have bought $100,000 worth of Microsoft, Apple, and Google stock, gone to a well-known state university on student loans, and then deferred the loans until I could pay them off with my millions.

If you have money, can't you get good healthcare almost anywhere? And for international medical insurance, I've heard that Bupa is good, although I haven't had to look into it personally.

I would have gone to Rutger or NJIT or even Jersey City State College (now New Jersey City University), gotten my BS in Accounting, become a CPA or a tax attorney (Rutger's Law) and invested the rest of the money. That is what I would do with the mind I have now. If I were to use the mind I had as a young person, I would have had a non-stop party for two years and been broke with nothing to show for it!
