I was invited to join the Golden Key Honor Society at American Public University. I currently have a 3.86 GPA. Their email indicated "Membership invitations to Golden Key are only extended to students in the top 15% of their class based on cumulative GPA. Receiving this invitation is an honor which recognizes your superb academic achievement."

First of all there is an $80 fee to join, which I don't particularly want to pay. But I would gladly do so if this would be beneficial to put on my resume. Also, they boast of job connections, scholarships, and networking. I have read mixed reviews from different forums, some with pros and cons of joining honor societies. Some indicate Golden Keys is well respected, while others claim its a scam.

Any thoughts? I have a few days left before the deadline to join. TIA!!!

IMO, $80 is a bit steep. Honestly, I don't think it makes a difference on the resume.

Now, if it were "Phi Beta Kappa," that would be a totally different scenario.

I don't know anything about Golden Keys, but if I were you I'd think about joining one honor society. At least in my field (computer science), including a GPA on your resume comes across as a little tacky after you've been out of school for a few years. Adding Latin honors and a honor society, on the other hand, lets people know you did well in school without seeming like you're bragging about your GPA.
