Harvard offers Computer Science 75 Building Dynamic Websites Building Dynamic Websites / OpenCourseWare you can pay and take it for credit, or just watch the videos and do the work yourself of course you'll need access to apache and php
Thanks for a great link, James! I went to the Harvard Extension School link you gave and found a drop-down list with five computer-related courses available on the same basis. They are: Building dynamic websites http://cs75.tv/2009/fall Intro to Computer Science 1 http://cs50.tv/2009/fall Understanding computers and the Internet Understanding Computers and the Internet / OpenCourseWare Exposing Digital Photography Exposing Digital Photography / OpenCourseWare XML with Java, Java Servlet and JSP XML with Java, Java Servlet, and JSP / OpenCourseWare I downloaded the lectures on Digital Photography (my personal interest) and this is a VERY high-quality program. As a freebie -- simply amazing! Thanks again, James! (And thanks to Harvard Extension School!) Johann
What do you plan to do with your degree? Most web design jobs are based more on portfolio & experience than having such-and-such degree. There are not too many associate or bachelor degrees specifically in web design/development that I've seen, most are in computer science or information systems/technology. One that I've seen is Baker College's associate & bachelor's degrees in web development: Online Programs | Baker College Their tuition fees don't seem too unreasonable (note that the fees listed are per quarter hour): https://www.baker.edu/departments/finaid/fees.cfm
you know what I haven't really given that much thought... I just wanted to build/design websites I guess I should just look into a computer science base degree. I will check out baker. Thank you
These aren't academic courses, but there are some really outstanding video tutorials on using all the major web development tools (Photoshop, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, PHP and Javascript, etc) at Lynda.com. I have an employee who has become really sophisticated at using all sorts of tools, from web development to graphic design, to video production, using solely the Lynda tutorials, and I think an unlimited one-month pass is $25 or something. I also echo the comment that in the web development field, your credentials and training typically don't come a lot into play, it's much more your portfolio and how you present yourself. If you simply want to learn how to do great work, I'd start with Lynda. If you want a degree in web design or graphic arts or something I'd look at a community college with online courses (many graphic design programs) and then maybe transfer to a good 4 year program if you feel like the degree is that important. Hope that helps!
FHSU's INT program may suit your needs quite well. They also have a Web Dev Certificate which you can then roll into the degree: http://www.fhsu.edu/virtualcollege/degrees/Certificates/web-development//. Here is the link the the Web Dev degree: Information Networking & Telecommunication (Web Development) - Fort Hays State University FHSU has a great rep and is affordable to boot.
