    Hi all!

This might seem like an odd request, but I'm curious if any of you know of anywhere online where I could get free guitar lessons. I bought a guitar about 8 years ago when I was a sophomore at CNU. I swore I was going to teach myself to play it, and well... 8 years later, and I haven't! I'd like to learn how to play it so I can do songs in my class. Things like school house rock would be much more lively if I did it versus just playing the DVD.

If anyone knows of resources I could use, I'd appreciate your sharing them!

    Thanks,
    Matt

I play a little bit and while I don't use specific sites other than guitar tabs.com I can give you some tips. most guitar tabs available online will show finger placement for the chords at the top of the page. If you're just starting out just search for some guitar scales and practice at least a half hour a day. it will improve your finger dexterity and help build calluses on your finger tips (your fingers will hurt like hell until you do this). Start off with Jimmy Buffet songs, they are all 3-4 cords and pretty simple to play (primarily open cords). And from there you can move onto bar cords, finger picking, etc. Hope this helps.

There are a great many video based guitar lessons available online--especially on YouTube. Start with Berklee College of Music's YouTube channel and you can go from there. There are hundreds of lessons on YouTube. I wish that I had something like this when I started playing 37 years ago.

    Thanks for the information!

I play sax, and that came naturally. However, a string instrument is a completely different beast. I'm going to attempt it when I get some free time, and I'll be sure to look over the things you've suggested!

My son learned how to play electric bass on YouTube. After 6 months we took him to his first lesson with a former bass player in the UM-Duluth band. After 15 minutes she gave us our money back and said that lessons would be a waste of time; he was better than she was.

Now that is funny and amazing. He must be a natural to become so good, so quickly. I have been teaching guitar lessons on and off for 25 years and I rarely see someone progress that fast.

Matt, have you looked at the instruction software by eMedia? It is quite good, so much so that I am thinking of beginning to use it with my guitar students. The problem with the YouTube stuff is that there is no complete method of instruction; there's lots of cool lessons, but nothing that takes you from absolute beginner to intermediate guitarist. With the eMedia, for $50 you get lessons that would probably have cost you around $1000 had you paid an instructor. Here is a link: eMedia Guitar Method - Version 5.0 (CD-ROM) and more Guitar at GuitarCenter.com. Like I said, I am thinking of buying a copy of this and using it instead of book-based guitar methods.

Hands down, the best free online guitar lessons are given by Justin Sandercoe. Free guitar lessons : Complete Beginners Method and loads of Blues, Jazz and rock : Learn how to play Guitar free here!
I have nothing to do with him, just a happy student.

If you go the DVD route, the eMedia course is something I did not like at all. I bought the Gibson Learn and Master Guitar course for about $160. It's 20 DVDs broken into sessions. I am going through the course now and am finding it to be wonderfully put together. I had never picked up a guitar before and I'm progressing along nicely.

That's good news. Fine female players have been with us forever. When I started playing - back in folk-music days, about half the performers were women. I remember being able to go downtown to a coffee-house and see Joni Mitchell (Joni Anderson then) for one dollar admission. Plenty of representation at the top of the field (which Joni soon joined), e.g. Joan Baez, Odetta, Elizabeth Cotten ...

Fast-forward a few years, we get Bonnie Raitt. Wow! I remember seeing her on TV - one of her first appearances, when she was about 18. Go back into earlier blues days and there's Memphis Minnie Douglas, who once beat Big Bill Broonzy in a blues contest!
Classical guitar - many female players. I remember being given my first Liona Boyd record as a present, back in the 70s. Still have it. Jazz? Rock? Amazing lists. Good article here:

    Keep picking, ladies. I'm listening!
