I just ran across an article about a girl who just graduated from Northeaster with a bachelor's degree and......$200,000 in debt. She's working a full time job now and is living with her parents but can't make enough money to pay her debt.

    What did she do?

She created a web site to accept donations to pay her student debt. :ponder:

She admits her degree should have only cost $40,000... But she 'took summer classes' and 'studied abroad'. Even though she knew she was digging herself into a hole.

I'm sorry, she's not deserving of a bailout. Maybe a brain transplant. But certainly not a bailout.

It's true that tuition, fees, room and board total approximately 50k at Northeastern

It's unclear to me why this person thinks that anyone would want to give her money. I know that I don't.

Unfortunately, the $40,000 is for only one year at Northeastern. So it should have been around $160,000 for a bachelors :eek2:

I bet she'll collect some donations. There was a girl a few years ago who started a website seeking donations when she racked up thousands in credit card debt, not only did she cover her debt, Oprah had her on her show to tell her story.

Funny thing is....I just discovered the article that talked about her website a couple of hours ago. Since then she's already collected around $300. You can see how much she's collected under the "Progress!" tab.

Here's the original article that caught my attention.

Poor, foolish, young girl. It's that blind faith in higher education, where they believe that any degree will lead to a big income. Maybe that was true in her parents or grandparent's day, but it's not true today. I think schools should be partly responsible for allowing young people to make such horrendous mistakes. There has got to be some social responsibility on the part of the schools, IMO.

I totally agree. Also, nowhere have I seen anyone mention what field of study she earned her degree in. I'm curious to know.

I can add this to the list of things that I will not donate money to.

Yes, I feel sorry for her, but I'm not interested in bailing her out of a stupid decision. We all must pay the price for our mistakes.

See, if she had completed her BS online through Northeastern, she would only be $50,000 in the hole! :)

    She's already up to $1,245.65.

Northeastern was happy to approve those student loans, and then charge using her name and social security number.

I am with Michael in that I really do feel bad for her. I am not one of those, rub-in-in-your-face type of people, but I just can't motivate myself to help out someone like this.

The other day, I came across a man on the street, hunched over on a walker, asking me for help to get to a cancer treatment center. My heart aches at seeing things like that. I feel no such pain for a person who has complete control over their situation and wants the entire world to fix the monumental mess made of their life. Besides, if she had a choice between $200k in debt or cancer, which would she choose? Hopefully that puts her debt into a more honest perspective. How about we raise $200k for cancer patients?
