I thought I was taking my final for my last class for my AS in CJ this Sunday. I got hit with the news the school put me in the wrong class for my degree plan and I will need to take one more class. I am taking it in stride though, and I will just take my last class in the next semester and keep on trucking! Anyone else have something like this happen?

That's a shame, sorry that happened to you. The same thing happened to my daughter studying in-person at the local CC. She followed the plan they gave her and, when she finished it, they said she was missing two classes. That's pretty incompetent on the schools part.

Actually, it's always seemed to me that causing students to have to take a single class in an extra semester is something of a sport to registrars and advisors. Almost everyone I know that is a college graduate has a horror story to tell about getting bad advice from people who are supposed to know the rules.

If you do a search on some of my old posts, you'll run into a thread about my own phone call from UW's registrar that led to a similar situation for me, so I definitely feel your pain. Keep your head up, though - you're almost there, and this setback is minor in comparison to the effort you've already put in and the accomplishment you'll feel when you finally hang the diploma on your wall.

    Best of luck!

Wow. I would be seriously pissed off! I have never had this happen nor have I known anyone who has had this happen but I can tell you that I plan my own courses and what I will take based upon the requirements. In fact my advisor has stated that I should do her job because I already do it anyway! And she meant it in a good way ;) I am very involved in knowing that I need to take and when and so far it has worked for me.

Just be thankful its only one course. DeVry University did this to me during my undergrad. In my case, I had to complete three extra classes, and now I know it was for them to squeeze more money from because they hated that I transferred some credits taken at a community college.

Is DeVry any good? I know someone who is considering going there.

In my brief experience with my current university, I have learned to be extremely wary of anything the administration tells me. I stay very proactive and engaged in my degree plan. Luckily, I have an advisor who is (usually) my advocate in my ongoing feud with bureaucratic inanities.

I have been misled many times by the administration; luckily, so far I have caught all of the mistakes before they have been too costly. Good luck!

DeVry is superb if you are looking for a practitioner/hands-on education. I also like the fact that they maintain a strong relationship with many big name tech companies who hire a good chunk of their grads for tech positions. The only part that I dislike about them is the super high tuition. Many of their bachelor degrees cost about $70K now, and their master's will squeeze you out of $35k or more. Knowing what I know now and with the many quality DL options available for substantially lower costs, I would not recommend taking all coursework at DeVry to anyone except they have alternate ways of paying for their degree. Taking out $70k student loans for a bachelors degree is akin to insanity, in my opinion.

It happens all the time but usually not during your first 60 credits. Since most 4-year schools won't accept anything more than 60-66 credits from a 2-year school you may end up with an extra 3 credits.

BTW, the quote in your signature line needs some type of explanation. Hawking may have said it and maybe you use it to show that even geniuses put their feet in their mouths on occasion, but standing alone it comes off as needlessly confrontational.

A $70K bachelors? You are right, that is insane. Good job placement or not.

Yes, own its own it does sound a lot rougher then I would like it to be....but, science is fact. I feel like the science has been white washed to support the homosexual rights PC BS. The original scientist who found the "gay gene" has been debunked time and time again and most scientific research points to the fact there is no such gene. If people want to be gay, fine by me, but let's call it what it is a choice. If there was such a gene it would have died long ago. What has changed in our society is the need to reproduce; we just don't need to preserve our species any longer so people do not need to mate. If people had a gay gene and were with other people with gay genes then homosexuals would go existent in a very short period of time. I hate the fact politics obscure science!!!

The only people I hate are the people who keep cancelling my favorite tv shows...Kings, Jericho, the one where they were on the space station (can't think of the name of it)...etc.

I dont know if you will recall my post a while back about a friend husband who had 57k in student loan debt and had not completed his Bachelors yet... well he went and still goes to Devry.. In my opinion if their financial aid office cant handle things then the whole school is probably screwed. but I cant speak from going there personally....

That's about where I'll end up when I walk in the spring. Student loans hurt. Here's hoping the Public Service Loan Forgiveness plan survives legislation for 10 years.:boggled:

The more I read here, the more I love UIS. They have a degree audit system online; I can go check what courses I've taken, and what courses I need for graduation. No surprises. And when I have had question, the customer service there has been awesome all around -- from Admissions, Registration, the Math department, everyone I've dealt with has been friendly, helpful, and responded quickly to inquiries.

Where did Dr. Hawking's statement originally appear?

Over the years, I have known many students who were informed by college officials that they were ready to graduate only to be told a few days before the graduation ceremony that they were missing some kind of credit. It happened to my wife's niece a few months ago. I am happy to say that I have never been the victim of "The Dean's Two-Step," but it can happen to anyone. My only advice to students would be to keep a close eye on your requirements and ask a lot of questions of college officials if you have any doubts about your transcript.

Colleges these days make too darned many degree requirement changes. The world would be a lot better place if the content of the courses would be changed rather than schools instituting new courses.

In b4cz28's signature, evidently. There's no other record of that quote anywhere else online. Even the name of the famous scientist is misspelled.
