How do you guys go about identifying journals fitting to a research paper subject.

We probably all know the leading 10-15 journals in our discipline, but there seems to be an endless supply on smaller journals, peer reviewed open access online journals and so on which might bring opportunities for smaller projects.

Using the journal syndication places like Elsevier and Emerald seem to cover only a selected range, e.g. ignore open access journals all together.

    Any ideas, thoughts, personal experiences?

As someone who has chosen the career fields of instructional technology and distance learning, I have a broad array of choices in those areas and have amassed a list of over 30 peer-reviewed journals related to my areas of interest (some print and some online). I have also been able to publish technology-related articles in library and in teacher education journals.

What is your area/discpline of interest?

Join one or more professional bodies in your area of expertise then submit papers for presentation at conferences. They will probably be printed in the conference proceedings. Some may be selected for publication in their journals or magazines.

I have presented about eight papers (a couple with co-authors) this way, and could present many more if it wasn't for time available, ITAR considerations, or proprietary work. I have started outlining a handbook related to one of my specialties but have yet to decide how to publish it if I get that far.
