    Hello all-

Do you need an M.B.A. (Marketing) in order to pursue an D.B.A. (Marketing)? Or can you enter a D.B.A. (Marketing) with any Masters degree?

Some DBA programs don't require any masters degree. I know a prof at UMass Boston that got a masters in communications from Washington state then did his PhD in marketing at the university of Oregon.

    Any recommended D.B.A. (Marketing) DL?

This is for a colleague. His BA and MA is in Legal Studies, but he wants to pursue an D.B.A. with a concentration in Marketing.

That's a stretch. I mean there is some commonality between marketing and communications. What kind of work experience does your friend have? I don't know much about distance DBAs, but I'm sure some members here could make some recommendations.

He worked as a paralegal, but the firm downsized a few years ago (during the time of the recession outbreak). He has been unemployed since then, but managed to work small jobs here and there, and allowing the State to help him financially. His main goal is to open up a business of his own. He has small money saved up for the pursuance of the degree, so that is not the problem. I think the only problem is him locating a program that will take a non-business masters degree.

We looked at Walden, Argosy, and The International School of Management. Also Northcentral University was in the pot, but after reading some posts here, we ruled them out.

If he wants to open his own business and has no business background a DBA isn't going to be of much benefit. Get an MBA or just take some general business classes to understand basic principals of business. Why does he want a DBA? It's a very specialized degree that won't expose him to other business sectors like finance and general management? If he wanted to do consulting I could possibly see the DBA having some benefit, but not without some real world marketing experience.
