Thoughts on Columbia State University (CSU), UIS, and UWF?

    Hi there,

So I've been researching various distance MSCS (Masters in Computer Science) programs and have found three programs which seem both affordable and quality.

Does anyone have any experience with these three programs as a student or otherwise?

The programs I'm interested in are:

Columbus State University (Columbus State University: 2009-2010 Academic Catalog)

University of Illinois at Springfield (University of Illinois Springfield - UIS)

University of West Florida (UWF - Mathematics and Statistics - Online MS in Mathematical Sciences Program)

I'm interested in hearing any pros or cons . . . thoughts, experiences, etc. Also, even though I'm particularly interested in the Masters of Computer Science, I'm interested in hearing general comments about the above schools.

In short I'm hoping that one--or all/any--of the above programs would provide a solid grounding in computer science (my BS is in economics, so I'm looking to make the switch to computer science for the MS) at an affordable price.

Thanks in advance for all your responses!

    Warm regards,

    Abe

    Abe,
I would recommend a side-by-side comparison of national accreditation and overall cost for each institution. Just an FYI, I plan to pursue an MSA (Master of Science in Administration) from UWF next year so I am a little biased toward that school. Good luck with your decision.

I thought you, the original poster, would like to know that, whereas your original post refers to Columbus State University (a legit school in GA), your thread title refers to Columbia State University (a nefarious degree mill).

I have looked at UIS because they have a Bachelors degree completion program in Mathematics, one of the few Math programs around. In general the school has a decent reputation and they remain on my short list. I know it's not exactly what you asked but it's as close as I could get.

Whoops, thanks for pointing that out Ted; yep, I was attempting to ask about opinions of ColumBUS State University. I can't figure out how to edit my original post, otherwise I would. Hmmm....

I have looked into UWF and called with questions. The support and willingness have been great. I am looking at the MSA in Public Admin or the Certificate in HPT and rool into the MSA in HPT. Each time I called I spoke to one of the department chairs and not an admissions person. One of the department chairs called me, we spoke for about 30 minutes, I had the number in my cell phone, I called the number back at 10PM to leave a message about something and someone answer - it was his personal cell phone he called me from. We spoke for another 30 minutes! Now that is service.

UIS is excellent. They have won multliple awards for the quality of their online programs.

I know this is an old thread. However I just wanted to put in my two cents as there have been some program changes since the last response.

UWF has an ABET engineering school, and the CS degree is from the engineering department. The newest offering is a M.S. in CS. There are two concentrations for online students; Database Systems and Software Engineering. On campus they also have the pure Computer Science concentration.

I have called the records department and they say the diploma and transcripts read "Master of Science Computer Science/Database Systems", or "Master of Science Computer Science/Software Engineering".

The entry requirements are more flexible than those of other engineering schools and the cost is very reasonable. I know this won't be as challenging as some other pure CS programs, but if you are looking for a CS degree and not a CIS, IS, or MIS degree this is a great opportunity.

They do require either a GRE, GMAT or MAT.
