About a month ago i posted about my study plans to do an MBA in Finance from Aspen and a BSC in accounting and finance. I asked for advice if I should do both at the same time or do one program at the time. After some sound advice about burn out and too much of a workload, I opted to do the Bsc first through the University of London and then move on to an MBA. This was based on the fact that i wanted to upgrade my knowledge and career change from hotel business to an office job.

Today I received a very disappointing email from the University that I first need to do an O-level exam in Maths before they will allow me to proceed to the bachelors program. I can do the exam in Janaury but then would have to wait another year before i can enter, a year which i do not have.

    So my next questions are:

1 Are there any other programs at the bachelors level which can study from today, instead of having to wait another year to enter?

2a I looked at a top up degree from Sunderland University in Accounting and Finance, but so far i have not received a reply from their agent? Any thoughts on that program?

2b I also looked at the cima qualification ( CIMA - Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) and they have a certificate in business accounting which can be done with online study. The exams can be taken at a local test centre. I do not want to do the acca qualification (Accounting | Chartered certified accountants | Accountancy from ACCA) because i would not meet their work experience requirements.

3 Should I just go ahead and throw caution in the wind and go for the MBA straight?
The MBA from Aspen and the MBA from Heriot Watt (they have an agent here in Nigeria) are my two best options due to my current workplace.

Otherwise I would prefer to take the Warwick MBA, but here in Nigeria not all books and courses arrive on time if at all

If you have any other thoughts or suggestions, please let me know

    Thanks for any input.

  2. IMO, an MBA from Aspen is less valuable on a resume than than a BSc from the University of London. (Presuming you have no other bachelor degrees.) Can you enroll in any classes at another university right that would transfer to the UoL program? Maybe you could talk to your academic adviser about this. That way you wouldn't be wasting a year.

Personally, brother, I would go with Heriot Watt.

    rdl50,

That's very disappointing indeed. I am assuming you are looking at the BSc program through LSE. I notice that they also have an "Access Route" program that will allow you to take up to two classes without being formally admitted to a degree program, and on completion of the second course, you can transfer into a full degree program. Unfortunately, the application deadline for non-EU students was on September 17th, but given that you applied for admission to the full BSc, you might be able to petition them to admit you to the Access Route program instead.

If that doesn't work, you might consider going the "Big 3" route in the US, although I don't know how accessible credit-by-exam testing is in Nigeria. Even if credit-by-exam options aren't available, you could probably put together enough classes through LSU and BYU correspondence study (or other options) to get an AA degree from one of the "Big 3", then transfer to the University of Wyoming's Outreach School to pursue their BSBA program. When I was studying at UW, we had a student who was pursuing his degree from China in the program with us. Unfortunately, I have lost contact with him and do not know if he ever graduated.

You've been dealt an unfortunate setback, and I'm sure you're feeling down. But trust me, if earning your degree was easy, everyone would have one. You've got a tougher row to hoe than most because of where you live, but that will make achieving your goals all the more satisfying. Best of luck, and please keep us updated!

I also suggest you look into this route.

My daughter got accepted into a UK BSc program but only after earning several O and A levels as prerequisits
