  1. I was thinking about how awesome it would be if there was a place where you could look for degree programs by genre, accreditation, as well as get other general information. This would be a painful task for one person, but an open wiki project on DegreeInfo would be great for that.

For instance, you could click on the section in the wiki for MPA programs and a full list would come down with all the programs. Click on an individual program and you'd get details on it, link to the site, delivery method, as well as conjecture, anecdotes, links to relevant threads here on DI, etc. The wiki pages could be edited by DI members only.

Over time I think the project could become immensely useful for those looking for degrees. A little bit of advertising on the page would probably compensate for the added bandwidth.

What do you guys think? There are now so many programs available that if someone asks about an MPA program in a thread, they're sure to get a hodgepodge of responses rather than a definitive list. This would be way more useful than wading through sticky threads.

    Sounds like a good idea.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but have fun outrunning the degree mill operators and other spammers, because it seems like it would take constant vigilance to do that.

  4. Good point. I wonder if the work around to that would be that you could only edit the wiki after you've reached 200 posts and/or requested and were approved access.

We're in the planning stages of something like this. As Steve points out, it would be impossible to have as an open wiki, given not only the number of mills, but also it would be quickly overrun by people with their crappy little lead generation sites. So it will be something that we maintain, but we have some pretty high hopes for it.

Longtime readers will remember that we had a database of schools available some years ago. It's now hopelessly outdated, and wouldn't be nearly detailed enough for what would be needed, but that's the direction we're going in, with some means of updating based on edited crowdsourcing and contributions from students and such.

  7. If you could get some momentum going with this thing and get everyone contributing, the project could become a renowned international resource. I think it is an excellent idea.
