  1. Also, considering schools don't agree on standards for giving out latin honors (if they give them at all), do they hold much utility or value on a resume?

I graduated "with honors" from Excelsior College (they do not award latin honors for associate degree graduates). This also appears on my diploma with a nice raised seal. Very classy. ;)

My final GPA with Bellevue was 3.821, however, I did not receive cum laude honors, as undergraduate students must complete a minimum of 60 credit hours at Bellevue University (I completed 45 credits).

My BA honors were "well, you scraped by..."

But I had a 3.82 or so for my Masters, but, alas, no latin honors for grad students...

I have an overall 3.65 GPA on my SIUC transcripts, but they don't include the grades from transferred courses to that calculation. However, they do consider those grades for latin honors , which is why I didn't get any. SIUC gives cum laude for a GPA between 3.5 to 3.749. Two early F's at a school I did a lot of my general ed with in my not-so-responsible days brought down the house...

    Oh well, live and learn!

Yeah my TESC GPA (I took 21 cr with them) was something like 3.75 or 3.85 (I can't remember now) but I had to have more credits with them to get the latin honors, so I never got it.

My MBA GPA is 4.0 but they don't do latin honors for it :( Oh well!

No honors for me. But I passed both levels of education ;)

Interesting side bar question. Why don't they offer latin honors for grad programs?

  8. I would guess tradition, but I don't know for sure. I think you can graduate "with honors" from some graduate programs but it isn't latin honors.

Magna Cum Laude here. I graduated with a 4.0 GPA from Ashford's MBA program but graduate degrees do not have honors.

Summa cum laude from Excelsior, though by any reasonable measure, my undergraduate GPA was around 2.9 rather than 4.0 - Excelsior does a fine job of laundering the F's from one's earlier undergraduate transcripts. I was actually one of 5 finalists for some award at graduation.

Is 4.0 or 2.9 more reflective of my abilities? I think 4.0. But the semester where I stopped attending classes and failed to withdraw (and therefore received a magnificent 0.0 GPA for the semester) did, in fact, happen. Not according to Excelsior, of course.

Cum Laude here. It was pretty close though. When I had one class left before graduating I was at 3.49. Of course I had to be at least 3.5 for honors. I never really cared too much about honors but since I was so close with one class to go, I couldn't let myself be that close and not get it. So luckily my last class was a phys ed requirement that I needed to graduate. I finished that class with an A which got me to 3.52 so I could at least graduate Cum Laude. My diploma and transcripts are listed Cum Laude so I put it on my resume also.

  12. I received summa cum laude at Drexel University. I had a near 4.0 but due to a single A-, my GPA was lowered, I forget my final GPA -- something like 3.98.

Up until that point, I thought an A was a 4.0. Maybe Drexel differs from other schools in that regard?

Auburn's cut off for Cum Laude was 3.4, I didn't get it. I graduated with something between 3.0 and 3.39, but I had a hell of time in college. You'll never remember a 8 am lecture in business ethics, but you'll never forget the shenanigans you got into with your fraternity brothers at 4 am.

Had two honors for my BA--summa cum laude and also "highest honors," which is their award for the graduate(s) with the highest GPA. Mine was a 4.0.

I currently have a 4.0 in my masters program, finishing this fall.

I took 7 years Latin and 3 years Ancient Greek in high school. Does that count too?

I voted cum laude in the poll by accident, but I squeaked by with the bare minimum GPA to get summa cum laude for my BS.

I think the nice thing about it is that I think it is acceptable to put on a resume forever, while a GPA does not seem acceptable after 10 years or so.

I didn't earn a very high GPA in my undergraduate studies, which is something I regret. I have a 3.87 at National University where I earned my teaching credential and my master's. The only perk I got from that GPA was a small line on my diploma that says "with distinction" and I was nominated to join Pi Lambda Theta where I maintain a membership. Unfortunately, they didn't offer any latin honorific for my degree.

Never really thought of that. Good point! Now I'm even more glad I squeaked by. But it makes since it's on your diploma forever, whereas your GPA is not listed on your diploma.
