So we went back and forth in a recent thread on whether or not you should designate the campus of a state university a credential was earned from on your resume. For example, stating that your degree is from UC-Santa Cruz instead of just stating the University of California, USC-Aiken instead of just saying the University of South Carolina, or PSU-Erie instead of just writing Pennsylvania State University (I'm not interested in how the state has set up the system).
I say yes, others say no, but I wanted to see what other forum members think. I limited to the options to "yes" and "no" because I don't want people to start coming up with random scenarios that create a gray area. So just think in general terms. If you have a scenario you would like to point out, feel free to list it in the comments section.
Thanks to Michael for helping me figure out how to use the poll feature, much appreciated.

Yes, I think you should attach the entire school path on your resume'.

  3. Comparing PSU to UC or CSU is like comparing apples to oranges. PSU is one university divided among multiple campuses. UC and CSU are completely separate universities under the umbrella of a state system.

I think you need to work on formulating a valid question before proceeding. Otherwise there's no point in debate.

I abstain from giving my opinion until a valid question is formed.

Question is valid, thanks for your opinion though.

  6. If there was one, it wouldn't matter. The poll is pointless.

Again, you're entitled to your opinion.

IMO, you should list what is on your diploma.

I think that's a good guideline. If the school makes the distinction on the diploma, put it on the Resume. Otherwise, don't. Your call.

The problem with that for this individual discussion is that PSU's diploma says "The Pennsylvania State University" and doesn't indicate Global Campus. I think that's what the original discussion was about?

Doesn't matter to me- if it has more than one campus, I list the campus, just because I'm anal like that. No particular reason, I just do.

Makes since. Only after reading the last thread did I contact APUS. They told me the same thing. "Basically one would mirror what is on their diploma. Although words may change over time, it would be better to mirror what is on your diploma"

Do whatever gives you the greatest advantage. If you went to a famous campus, list it. If not, don't.

I'm not sure on this point. When doind a search on the internet I pulled up a number of Penn State diplomas and everyone listed the college within the university that the degree was housed in. Does anyone know if the Global Campus considers itself a separate school?

I want to make clear that I don't want to make this specifically about PSU, just state university systems in general. I know that that is the campus/school that sparked the debate but my intention wasn't to focus on it.

For Columbia College, if you get your degree through their "online campus," you get to pick which physical campus to get your degree conferred through.

So you have to chose your campus before you start your degree (the campus that you actually apply to). I'm looking for another reference to this, where they suggest that you apply to the nearest campus, but don't require you to.

So I had to select "no" on the poll but with an explanation. I'll include some state school examples and I don't mean to detract from your poll.

I think there are several issues. If the schools are separately accredited then there shouldn't be a question of what you should list but when the campuses fall under the umbrella of the main school it becomes gray. As painful as it sounds I had to agree that in the PSU instance the school markets the degree and provides a diploma (according to the website) without distinction between the campuses. I believe they have diluted a very strong name and unfortunately some will benefit without the same work.

In many instances campuses are nothing more than a remote location, especially when on a military base, including overseas (Troy university for example only issues a Troy University diploma regardless of campus). How do you list that on a resume? In other instances, schools which were once a campus are now separately accredited(Auburn/AUM, University of Alabama Birmingham and Huntsville), how does a person list that on a resume if they graduated prior to separate accreditation?

When the schools don't make the distinction I don't know why the individual should. I'm not advocating lying or being deceptive during an interview but the school is deriving a benefit by marketing these degrees "the same as". Folks who spend their money for this benefit should not be prohibited from using it to their full advantage. Even Harvard goes to lengths to discuss this issue with the extension school.

+1. If there is a specified campus on your diploma or transcripts, it's there for a reason.
