I have noticed that many do not follow their lower degree plan. Example would be in following it:

    BA/MA/PhD English

    BA/MA/PhD History

    etc...

Is there, from a general point of view, a reason for this?

    Here is what I see:

    BA English, MBA, etc

    BA History, MA Education...

Just something I noticed while looking at many member's signatures.

haha that's me! :) (and Kevin, too, I think)

In my case, English was the easiest major to finish. I started out when I graduated high school in 1999 majoring in English/Secondary Ed with minors in Health and Math. I wanted to teach Health, Math, and Comp in high school. My mom got cancer, I had to change schools/finish up when I could, so switched to a "practical" major (which was Finance with a minor in Math). I had so many credits scattered and just wanted to finish that I did TESC and their B.A. in English. I enjoyed all the Lit classes I had to take, and actually the class that had the most impact on me in my entire scholastic career to date was TESC's African Encounters class (African Lit class).

I'm glad I stuck with it, but I'm doing an MBA for a myriad of reasons that maybe could've been avoided if I had done a BSBA or something. 1) I want to demonstrate a background in business, even though I've been in the working world for 11 years now. 2) Eventually I would like to start my own side business and an MBA helps/looks better. 3) I love numbers and raw data and I'm looking forward to the Quantitative section of the MBA program.

I'm also tossing around another BA, MA, and maybe eventually a D.H.Ed. :D My main interests are in literature, health promotion and education, and international finance. How's THAT for varied?

I did a BA in English, and MA in Humanities. I wanted to go all the way through with a steady flow, but was greatly interested in the Great Books while at the end of my BA in English studies. So my path is:

    BA English Lit.

    MA Humanities (Great Books)

DA Humanities (Great Books) -Working on...

Maybe I should go back for a BA in Humanities (Great Books)...LOL

yep me too. I was a secondary education major teaching Biology and English. After student teaching and doing an internship in public schools I had to rethink teaching in public schools. I shifted focus to a major in English, figuring that it had broader applicability than Biology, secondary education and then took a position in a technical field (military background) after graduation and worked my way from there. As I moved in to program management I was required to have continuing education, so I finshed an MBA (several actually) because the skills were necessary. I figure if I have to have continuing education why not complete a degree or three, four, whatever it ends up being.

Like Heather, my interests are varied, I have about 90 extra undergrad credits in engineering, management, HR, you name it. But the real reason is that many of us are trying to balance interests with making a living and have had to make decisions on coursework based upon that balance. It is hard to justify paying for a course when you can spend the money making a car payment (or buying groceries). I can always go to the library for personal enrichment. But when I get retired I'm going to take some classes(maybe a degree) strictly for me without any forseeable monetary payback.

I don't have one, but I'm fluent in French and Serbian, passable in German and Italian (working on getting better), and I hope to pick up Spanish soon too. I can pretty much understand Russian when spoken to me (a lot of it is similar to Serbian/Yugo) and I can read Cyrillic decently well, but have a hard time speaking it back.

I might pick up a B.A. in Modern Languages along the way, just as a resume padder and for fun :D

  10. I've gone from B.S. in psychology to a masters in community development. It hasn't been too rough of a transition because psychology and the sociological concepts of community development are similar.
