Anyone else seen the super aggressive ad campaign USC has got going for their online program? TV commercials and internet ad's everywhere. I have seen more USC ad's in the last month than I have seen for U of P. With U of P their ad campaigns may have devalued their degrees in the eyes of the public. Will USC’ s aggressively advertised online program make DL seem more legit?

Yes, the more top schools that offer online degrees, the better. At some point they will begin to take students from the established online schools because of the name recognition value. As great of schools as say Walden or Capella are, would you rather tell people that your degree is from Walden or from USC? At least in my case, it would be USC, no question. Walden is probably just as good, but it does not yet have the name recognition.

+1 (Add smiley here if they worked when you click on them)

Name recognition is huge and the more big name schools moving toward DL the better. Hopefully it will eventually put alot of the for-profit DL schools under who are bring down the entire DL community by their shady actions. (One could only hope)

USC is a top tier school.

I think this will make the for profits more affordable as one of the ways to compete is make the education more affordable.

By the way, have you checked the price for the USC program? I'll bet it's really expensive.

Sorry for the dysfunctional smileys! The smileys work if you type in the text for them. Such as colon, the word "eek", colon to get this  colon, the word "cool", colon to get this  , colon capital "D" to get this :D and a standard colon and parenthesis to get this :) There are others too.

I have also noticed on a couple of other forums I frequent that The George Washington University and Penn State have really upped their advertising efforts for their online Masters in Homeland Security programs.

  8. In the Philadelphia metro area we've got Drexel University, Penn State University, Saint Joseph's University, Arcadia, La Salle, etc., etc., all with their online programs. These are well-respected local universities. I'd say the schools with online programs outnumber the ones that don't have them. This is the direction everyone's moving. 20 years from now there might be a few schools who have resisted the online revolution (and I hope there are for diversity's sake) but they will be a small minority.

I'm currently enrolled in the Penn State Public Health Preparedness program. Soon I'll be creating a post describing how it's going. So far so good....

I wonder if USC is using this program to test the waters and see if it's worth it to broaden their offerings...

I mentioned in another thread, I really think we will see a HUGE trend of students that are studying online, changing back to local public/NFP B&M universities. The profit margin is going to go through the floor and that MANY of the online only schools will start merging and consolidating and "dieing."

Here in North Carolina, you can get your BS degree in Business from SEVERAL UNC system colleges for a fraction of the cost of the "for profits"

University of North Carolina Online: Home

University of North Carolina Online: Business & Management Programs

32 programs, including several Masters and Certificate programs.

How can Phx and others compete? NC schools you are looking at say $5-10k for your degree vs the "for profit" schools charging many multiples of that?

5 years ago this was not true, but I think the trend is for the local schools to compete heavily. (I SOLD all my online school stock that I owned...)

  11. Will UNC let in any local yokel with a 2.1 high school GPA, no previous college coursework, and no intention of ever taking the SAT? There will always be a market for online-only for profit schools, I think. Lax entrance requirements and lax standards will always be desirable by some.

Including the ones accredited by DETC?

No, I have found DETC schools that only cost a few grand for a degree.

I think I went in there to check their tuition. I don't remember how much it was, but I remember being outraged. They say something about an innovative tuition reimbursement program, but who in their right mind would pay USC tuition for a second-career teaching degree? [IMG]

Agreed. I would sure love to have USC on my resume though. Anybody have an extra $100K they don't want?

USC's MAT is ridiculously and unconscionably expensive. It would be nice to have on the resume, but there is no way I could fund this program.
