With my degree completed, I have a question on propriety that seems to be unique to nontraditional degrees. My AA is done, but the diploma is not conferred until October .

In the meantime, would it be proper to send an updated resume to my clients that lists my degree? Do I have to wait until the official date of conferral, or is it good enough that I already have a date of degree completion?

I would list something like: (completed, to be conferred 10/31/10).

I would list it as complete.

You are DONE baby. The conferral is just a formality.

I changed my mind. Just list it.

Great! I'll just print this post and enclose it with my resumé!

List it! Why are they taking so long to confer it?

Well, yes, which is why this whole waiting until October business makes no sense. I have already been evaluated and everything is in order. Does it take two months to print a diploma and mail it?
Actually, I am just getting started. Note my signature, where it says "goal".

Not to mention my other goals. There is at least one other language I want to become certified to interpret/translate, although I am considering going for yet another one after that ;)

And that's just the top of the cloud over the open air above the tip of the iceberg.

And you can't forget the required Aspen MBA or EdD. :D

If I ever get into an accident and am paralyzed from neck to toe, then there is a slight chance I might consider doing either. Just to pass the time.

I don't know what you should do officially, but I would list it. It it ever came up that you had not officially received the degree, I can't see anyone having a problem with it once you explained that you had met the requirements and were just waiting for the paperwork.

Yeah. I'm sure it won't be a real issue. This is just a question of professionalism. The resume is only going to my current clients, who aren't even likely to ask me for transcripts. I might as well just tell them that the degree is actually a Ph.D from Cornell :D

This is a very interesting thread and I was about to post my own until I saw this one. A friend of mine was debating with me about listing potential degrees on your resume. Your situation is quite different because you've already completed the requirements and are just waiting on the conferral ( a mere formality at this point).

The debate though was at what point is it ok to list potential degrees on a resume. Let me clarify as well what the point was. If you are within 6 months of graduating would it be acceptable to list your potential degree like this:
B.S. in Underwater Basket Weaving (Anticipated Graduation 05/11)

We never ended up with a clear winner in the debate so I said that I would post here and watch the debate. :D

No one has an opinion on my upgrade to MC's question? :p

What does the transcript say? Use that date and whatever notation is necessary. As a rule, don't claim a degree that isn't supported by a transcript.

I would list it if it pertains to the position I was applying for.

That's what my argument was. As long as it's listed honestly (as in Anticipated Graduation Date) it can be discussed without the applicant having try and sneak it in to the interview. I agree that it needs to be relevant as well.

I want to know this as well. I will be done with my AS in CJ from AJU 11/10. I'm in my last set of classes now so should I list it? It’s different than MC situation because he is done. But with me being so close I wonder if I can get away with it.

I would list mine as follows:
•MBA in Marketing – TUI University, expected graduation 2011

This way you can discuss what you have learned so far and how it applies. I had NCU listed on my resume since 2005 with an expected graduation date of 2010. Looking at it in 2005, it says "I just got started but I am continuing my education", looking at it in 2008, it says, "I am almost done and have learned a lot"

It's not getting away with anything! You've legitimately earned the degree! :)

Like Randell posted you list it in a way that is not deceiving and leaves the door open to discuss your education. For you once the University sets a degree conferral date I would list it as "Degreel Conferral Date 11/10" and the exact date if you're given it. For me I would list it like randell pointed out "Expected Graduation 2012" because I've only begun my education. Overall I think it gives the interviewer an open door to discuss how you're actually moving forward in your education plus it allows you to display the knowledge you've already received. I may be completely wrong though...we do have several HR people on this forum so maybe they'll post something completely opposite of what I'm suggesting. ;)

I agree 100% with this post. Thanks for the input!
