I am just about to turn 52 and stupid me I have been reading on the net about age discrimination in the job force. It is horrible that age can keep you from getting a job. People having to take social security early just to eat and maybe not lose their homes. My questions is, what careers do you think are out there that age does not matter? Feel free to move this if I posted it in the incorrect area.
I wonder if most age discrimination is unconscious and going to interviews with cautiously energetic clothing and attitude would mitigate its effects. Besides, like B4 said, 52 (specifically) is the new 40 . I'm sure you will be fine!
Age meters when consulting statistics or looking via sociological agenda. Today we know that some obese people may be yang on the numbers but older then their chronological age. I just came back from tennis game with my songs great grand pa who is 86. He won the game. My sons tennis couch is 70 years yang. So its all subjective. I like to have mature employees providing advise to kid MBA's who are "running" things around. But to answer when does age not matter, its simple WHen we pass away .
If only you knew how many jobs I was rejected from because I was too young. Thankfully, youth doesn't last forever and I am now rolling in the dough*! *Because I bake my own bread and bagels.

If I owned a company I would want older people. More experience. In law enforcement departments fight to keep older officers as long as they can, better pay, benefits, leadership positions. I worked on a taskforce where the youngest you could make sergeant was 50. An older officer and a younger officer are like night and day.
I am just retiring from law enforcement (pre-retirement leave) and I am a little older than 52 yrs. When I advised the service I was leaving, I had unexpected offers for private employment. I am now going to work for a "not for profit" rehabilitation agency as a manager. A little different to say the least. My working life is far from over, it has just changed. I will greatly miss my friends from law enforcement, but I won't miss the nightwork, the scrutiny, the lawyers, the paperwork and all that goes with it. I have been given a chance to challenge myself in a new and interesting way. Your working life is far from over. You might need a little reinventing that's all.
I have a job that is pretty secure. So, I am not too worried. I know age is just a number but in the real world it can keep you from being employed. I plan on retiring from office work (which I hate )and getting a degree in equine management, online. I have no plans to ever retire if a can have a career doing something I love. I have got to stop reading the gloom and doom press. I wonder how long it will take before we see real recovery?
