Which one to choose? Specialist one (e.g MBA in IT Management, Finance, Engineering, Global Energy) or General one? Appreciate your comments Peddie
It's generally better to go with a specialist degree of some sort. Which areas do you have the most experience in? Those would be where you want your MBA. There are too many individuals out in the marketplace with generalist degrees and many are finding that specialists will beat them out in the job market. A specialist degree might narrow your options, but it will present you as an expert in your particular field.
I'd agree if you're talking about newly-minted MBAs with little to no work experience. A solid MBA program, generalized or not, covers most if not all areas to some degree, which is great for someone pursuing general management.
Hi there, I have 10 years working experience in IT but thinking of going for MBA in Finance with Durham University, UK hoping to get in Finance IT e.g Banking industry or something like that. I dont want to give up IT but I think there are more and more offshore IT. I already have a master degree in IT and hoping to get a MBA to further my career in a more senior level..... I have no background knowledge in Finance whatsoever but I suppose thats why I am paying to get myself learned....
My MBA is general, however, if I had to do it all over again, I would have chosen a specialist MBA in either accounting or finance. Hindsight is always 20/20.
NCU has an MBA in Engineering Management (Northcentral University | Masters Degrees Online | Online Degree Programs). The most bizarre one is the MBA in Applied Computer Science that I find deceiving as the course work is at the undergraduate or even community college level but you get a Master. This is a good way to say "I have a master in Computer Science" but have done the equivalent of a AAS in Computer Science in terms of work.
I got accepted by top universities in the UK (I am not boasting no...) One offers MBA in finance, the other one is more a general MBA. I dont know which to choose.
I believe the program was created in the early 2000's in order to profit from the computer programming job boom. It was kind of a short cut to a computer science type of degree with the label of Master but meant for non computer science graduates. However, I doubt it attracts many students nowadays as most programming jobs are being outsourced to India.
