Ok, so I have been here for a few years now trying to make up my mind but this is it.

I was going to do Swiss Management Center but never pulled the trigger, thought about UNISA and never followed up on the application. Now I am serious since I teach part time at EDMC and can get a DBA or any other terminal degree at Argosy for free.

I know, I know, nothing is free but I love teaching and I am self employed so I have the time. I am hoping to teach full time while I run my business which is on auto pilot and I can hire someone to manage it for me.

Problem is I want a PhD and Argosy does not offer one so I have finally sent formal inquiries to Stellenbosch and Pretoria.

I might be ( well AM ) crazy but I have all the time in the world so why not try a research based PhD while working on a DBA as well?

I asked the schools about residency requirements, cost and how the application process was started.

I want to study managemeent and strategy which is pretty generic so there SHOULD be some faculty available to mentor.

I have no illusions about teaching at Harvard but given my experience (27 years consulting and Wall street senior management, now independent and some teaching) and education is there any chance of teaching at an AACSB school with these schools?

    Thoughts?

Considering 27 years consulting and working on Wall Street, you should be able to teach. In my opinion, it's experience and not so much where your degree is from, or what kind of doctorate it is, that determines your demand as a teacher. I would think the free degree would serve you almost as well as a PhD. Actually, PhD degrees are becoming more common and do not hold the power they once had.

As far as attempting 2 terminal degrees at once is concerned, you are taking an awfully big project. Why not do one at a time? One doctorate is enough anyway.

If you want to teach at an AACSB school, an AACSB doctorate is highly desirable. If you survey the job postings at The Chronicle of Higher Education, AACSB schools almost always state that a PhD/DBA from an AACSB school is required to teach.

Are there exceptions...sure, but remember that the first round of screening will not take place with senior faculty.

I'm posting a link to the discussion about AACSB doctorates:

Although these programs will be a bit more expensive, after reading your Bio, I think you have the money to make the investment and travel for a short residency AACSB program. Go for it. Higher Ed needs more people with your background!

    Good luck.

Yes, I agree. I missed the part about your desire to teach at an AACSB school. If you want to do that, you should get an AACSB doctorate. However, there are plenty of other great schools that are not AACSB that you might consider as well. Why exactly do you only want to teach at an AACSB school? Just to be a part of the best of the best? If so, that's understandable; you certainly have the experience to do it.
