I'm now interested in starting the EdD at Liberty U. I really like the program and I like the fact that I can bail out half way and still earn an EdS if I want. That's a cool feature.

My one disappointment is the fact that they do not offer a concentration in Ed Tech. I have a master's in Ed Tech already and that's what I currently teach on a K-12 level. Do you think my master's in Ed Tech and a doctorate in Teaching and Learning would be fine if I wanted to adjunct teach computer app classes at an online school? Or, should I find a school that offers an EdD with a concentration in Ed Tech, like Walden? Walden is twice as expensive though!

    Liberty

    Michael:

Liberty has long caught my eye as well. At Christmas I will have my Ed.S from Northwestern State completed and Liberty will transfer in my 30 credits. My only hang-up is having to go down for two summers to complete the 3 intensive courses on-campus. I live a long way from Lynchburg and don't really want to have to spend two summers (well I would but leaving my wife home with 3 small children on consecutive summers is not going to be well-received!) on campus.

Perhaps I'll see you in a class sometime as if RA is the designation you want, then I think Liberty is the best deal out there. I wish Northeastern would take all my Ed.S credits in as that is where I'd REALLY like to go.

Keep us posted on your progress!

    Ian

PS - Will they transfer in your two NCU courses?

Thanks Steve. I'm not looking to teach IT classes; I'm not enough of a geek to do that. ("geek" being a positive term for a highly skilled IT guy) I'm more interested in teaching Ed Tech stuff; computer apps and how they work in a K-12 classroom. It's funny that some people call that IT too, but they mean Instructional Technology when they do.

I'm waiting to find out on that one. My NCU courses are business courses, so it's going to be sketchy.

If you got the cash then LU is a great place. It is my number one choice for college. In the south it has a great rep.

Agreed. Jerry Falwell may not be my cup of tea, but his university has a reputation for doing distance learning well. In fact, before I started at ATSU, I actually considered Liberty as well.

I concur, I chose them because of them being military friendly but they seem to have a class act going on there. I start their MAML program in a couple of weeks.

How long is Liberty's residence course going to be and what is the frequency? Anyone tried transferring Aspen Ed.D credits over?

LU residencies are only one week long. You wouldn't have to spend the whole summer away from your family, just one week for each class--three weeks total. The only other time you would have to travel to Lynchburg is for your dissertation defense.

I don't actually know, but I doubt that Liberty will accept credits from Aspen because the accreditations don't match.

3, one week residencies are required. I like the LU residencies better than other DL residencies such as Capella or Walden. LU's residencies are actual classes that are accelerated into one week. It seems to me that the other, more conference oriented residencies would be a waste of time.

In total you will have to go there 4 times. 3 residencies and once to do your defense.

I'm currently attending Liberty and have been very happy up to this point. They accepted 15 credits from UT Martin which put me on track to receive my Ed.S. this coming May. I plan on taking 3 classes this fall, one of which is the weekend intensive then finishing in the Spring before beginning my Ed.D. courses in the Summer.

So the 2 classes per semester format is not very tough to handle while working full-time? Are you a teacher?

Also, how steep are the text costs? Are you finding any texts used somewhere?

Where are you looking to teach? You should look into how they view an EdD earned online. Unless you are local to the school, they will figure it out. I believe you mentioned one of the reasons you left NCU was that one of your dream schools to teach at wouldn't have considered you. You might be in the same boat with Liberty.

Very good advice, thank you. I will give that thought some serious consideration.

I don't know about all of that. Liberty is a big deal in the south. It's a school you hear families who are conservative talk about putting their kids into LU. I don't know what people think of it out of the south, but a degree from a not for profit would not be a bad thing. I mean would anyone look down on an online degree from Penn State? It’s the same in the south for LU.

I teach middle school (6-8) resource.

Two of the courses are 8 weeks each, the third class is a weekend intensive that consists of four on campus visits that run for the weekend. To be hoenst, this Fall will be a trial run. Either way I will have only one course going at once, other than what time I attend for the weekend sessions.
