I'm searching for a DBA with low cost (under USD12,000), here are two options that best fit my case:

    1/ United Business Institutes
Site: UBI - United Business Institutes: Home
    Tuition: USD10,000 (www.netacademy.com.my)
Accredited: No, but some degrees validated by Uni of Wales
One of 20 best business schools in Europa (mba.startpagina.nl)

    2/ Swiss Management Center
Site: Online Business School - Distance Learning Management Degree - Economics PhD, MBA
Tuition: USD14,000 (however there are some scholarships for the developing countries)
    Accredited: ACSBP.
The largest online business school (Financial Times)

I'm a Vietnamese, so USD10,000 is a big problem to me. I would like to use my knowledge and doctoral degree to use in my jobs (banking in Vietnam) and teaching in some small internation business school or DL business schools in Vietnam (such as NCU, SCU, Kent,... already opening in Vietnam)

So please help me to have the right answer. I count on you only, especially Dr. Bear.

You could also buy his book. I just bought it yesterday on Amazon. Hopefully Dr. Bear will see this thread and answer your questions. You might get some good answers from others as well.

Many thanks. I highly appreciate yours' recommendation. I would email him and buy his book also. However, I hope this thread may help not only myself but also the others in the same situation.

The SMC DBA tuition is 16,500 Euros or US$21,344 which looks like a budget buster (or US$14,100 for their single payment plan):

As far as using the knowledge to use in your banking job, the first thing you should do is contact the faculty of both schools, and find out their experience in banking.

As for teaching, I don't think either would qualify you. The UMI DBA program has no accreditation. I'm not sure where the claim "One of the 20 best business schools is Europa" come from.

UMI looks to me more like a private school with an agreement with University of Wales for their BA & MA programs. It looks like they are trying to piggy back "their" MBA and DBA program on the reputation of University of Wales.

With the SMC program, the Economics PhD is not actually ACSBP accredited. Some of there other programs are however. It think it would be highly unlikely that a degree from SMC will enable you to teach at an RA school like NCU or Kent. (However, you might qualify based on where you got your masters degree.)

If cost is an issue for you, I would say look into University of South Africa.

No, their PhD in Economics isn't a good fit for his requirements. But he asked about the DBA, which is ACBSP. Also, since he's in banking, the Doctorate in Finance, which is ACBSP, might be of interest.

Steve (or anyone else), do you know what specifically is awarded for the Doctorate in Finance (ie DBA or PhD).

So sorry, Andy, but I have not been paying close attention to distance programs since I did the last edition of my book 6 or 7 years ago. [If the new owner, Random House, wants a new edition, then everything changes.]

I continue to get a lot of mail from readers who have chosen one of the research doctorates available from quite a few British, Australian, and South African universities.

There used to be a very helpful "Sticky" on these . . . but I don't see it now. Moderators???

    The matter of University of Wales validation has been discussed in some detail on this forum; might be worth a search. It's an odd concept, and has generated a fair amount of bad publicity.;

Thanks you all. Anybody help me to choose between the two schools or to make a comparison?

(Cause after searching for more than 2 years, one of them is the only choice for me. A un-accredited degree from a recognized school is better than nothing at all).

I beg to differ, an unaccredited degree from a recognized school is as good as nothing. Actually it is worse than nothing as you have to spend time and money studying for it.

As with all these things, it depends on the student's environment and goal, and the intended use. For someone who wants to teach at the university level in the U.S., then I'd agree the PhD from SMC isn't likely to be useful. But then in that particular case a doctoral degree from Aspen might be just as poorly suited, yet that doesn't mean it's "worse than nothing".

Judging from the demographics of my classmates, SMC's target market for this program seems to be mid-level technocrats and junior lecturers in developing countries. And for them it's very well suited.

Searching in the forum, I knew that you had has apply for UNISA or and Uni of Pretoria, however now you are pursuiting Ph.D at SMC. So pls share some more information with me, such as:

    - Will SMC DBA fully meet my demand?
    - How is its falcuty / supervisors?
    - Are your classmates who are teaching in developing countries become satified with the program, or are they having any progress in their job?
    - May I have your email address to ask for your recommendation (I also inteded to study at UNISA or another S.A Uni).

Just a thought, maybe we can do a separate forum called "Stickys" similar to a FAQ section where the team can compile the most significant threads without cluttering up the main forum. You already have to scroll half way down the page as it is.

There is a crucial difference, I am talking about unaccreditated versus DETC. Aspen Ed.D may be poorly suited for academic pursuits, but it is at least accreditated by DETC.

I'll still take credit for it since I mentioned it without knowing that.
