What is up graduate schools accepting transfer credit? Everytime I submit my transcript from my 1997 graduate degree to try to have transfer credit awarded I usually hear the following excuses.

    1. We do not accept any transfer credit over 5 years older. Why? Because the course you took back in 1997 is outdated now. Then I usually respond, "so if I obtain a degree from xxxxx University it will only be good for 5 years?"

    2. You transfer credit was part of your previous master's degree program. Since it was already applied towards another degree it does not qualify for transfer credit.

In my opinion is comes down to, they want more money so they are willing to give you nothing hoping that you will still attend their program. I wonder how many $$$ these colleges lose per year because of this. Throw me a peanut. Give me something.

I found the same thing. Very little of my previous work was accepted by any school and it was all RA. The only exception was Capella. They accepted a great deal of transfer credit but they only applied it to my electives. It didn't seem to benefit me even though they technically accepted the credits. I ended up not going there.

I also tried to go to University of Florida for my doctorate and was accepted, no problem. I bailed on that when I found out that they would not honor my RA master's degree because it was more than 5 years old. I would have had to have taken a lot of extra classes to make up for that.

While certain aspects of transfer credit may be dictated by accrediting bodies and other entities (e.g. SACS requires over 1/2 of graduate credits to be taken at the awarding university), much of the decision over types of credit, how old the credit can be and how it will transfer is really is up to the individual insitution (and sometimes individual programs within an institution).

I'm in the UMass-Lowell MBA program, I've been told they will accept up to 12 credits of AACSB accredited coursework as transfer.

As there are three elective classes in the program, this could knock out that entire requirement (unfortunately I only had one class to transfer.)

Where I work you can generally gain up to 50% credit in the program that you are going to study with us. We also allow credit for studies up to 10 years old in most instances.
