ONE class?

    Hi there.

My situation is unique (I think) as I am enrolled in a brick & mortar college working towards my master's in counseling. My BA is not in psychology, however, and they are requiring me to take some undergrad pre-reqs to get up to speed. Most notably, abnormal psych. They, of course, offer it at my institition, but at 450/credit, I'm trying to look for other options. The dept chair seems pretty lax (except for waiving the requirement altogether) and told me that I could even audit a class, just as long as I "get the information"

I'm trying to find the cheapest, most basic online course I can find, just so I can get it out of the way. In my ideal world, there's some free online class, but I've been looking and haven't had any luck. So far, the cheapest I've seen it is ~500 total at a community college in Massachusetts (where I'm a resident) I know thats very inexpensive and I'd be happy to pay that, but I just want to exhaust my options first.

Am I crazy to hope for something under $500?

You'd probably be better off just auditing the community college course. That should be rather inexpensive.

You could always test out of it for $250. Have you looked at this option - https://www.excelsior.edu/Excelsior_College/Excelsior_College_Examinations/Arts_and_Sciences_Examinations?_piref57_194514_57_194513_194513.next_page=CourseSearchShowServlet&_piref57_194514_57_194513_194513.ecPage=Summary&_piref57_194514_57_194513_194513.ecEvent=Detail&_piref57_194514_57_194513_194513.TITLE_ID=528&_piref57_194514_57_194513_194513.START_DATE=07/07/2010

I agree with Randell, testing out will be your least expensive way to get credit. Do they offer a CLEP test for that? I don't know.

I'm surprised that your chair said that you could just audit a course. That doesn't seem to make sense, wouldn't you need the official credits? When you audit, you do not get college credit, I'm pretty sure.

No, but there is an ECE for $240. Also, LSU independent study has a 3-credit self-paced course for $270.00. The original poster would have to check with his school to see if they would accept either.

I wonder what the price to audit a course would be? Free maybe? If the OP can somehow get by with an audit, which seems unlikely.

59 bucks per credit hour for out of state ! The whole class will cost you about 260 bucks!

Direct link to their catalog for summer classes,
    http://www.southeast.edu/Media/Website%20Resources/Media/ClassSchedules/Credit_Sum10_web.pdf
They are on quarter systems (10weeks) and their classes do not start for the summer til 7/14! You might have enough time if you called tomorrow and dealt with things over the phone after filling out the application tonight. Since you are only planning to take one class and will not need Fin Aid you should be able to get in quick.

I got most of my undergrad credits from them!

Your situation is not unique. I would ask your chair if you can take one graduate credit of "independent study" to read the textbook or related journal articles to "get the information."

The added benefit of this would be the course would then be paid by your assitanship (if you have one), and maybe would count towards your master's degree.
