"You got it online!"

  1. Anyone seen the commercial to the show Glee that has this dialogue:

Sue: I'll have you know I have my PhD!
    Will: You got it online!

No matter what you think of the show, does this say anything about the public perception of online education?

It says more about our generation's pool of talented screenwriters. Basically, there isn't one. Cheap shots and cheap jokes are all they have. Add that to the dozens of reasons I don't watch television.

    You don't watch T.V....

SO what do you do to occupy your mind, read books, internet, etc?

I am being serious with the question, because I have considered cutting back on T.V.

I stated before, and in another post here that online BA's MA's and PhD's are as one would make of it. I know plenty of folks who are "more in-tuned" to their own education while taking their degree(s) online. And there are MANY who I know as well, who went to the Brick and Mortar schools who earned Masters that STILL cannot compose a research paper.

    A lot...
    • School studies
    • Bible Study
    • Ministry
    • Library Books
    • Social Life
    • Dancing (especially salsa, these days)
    • Travel (Going to Asia this summer and Latin America probably twice in the fall and winter, interspersed with domestic trips to a few states here and there)
    • Languages
    • Exercise (I jog about 10 miles 3-4 times a week, walk rather than drive, do Tae Bo, calisthenics, etc. FYI- I am not exactly toned or ripped, but have a lot of energy and am in great health because of it)
    • Online Games (especially Spades and Connect 4, but I'm also a huge fan of Gomoku and Hearts)
    • Real-Life Games (visit friends and family and destroy them in Monopoly, Pinochle, and of course connect four)
    • Cooking (I had company the other night and made curry chicken for the first time :D, sounds awesome but is one of the easiest things I have ever made)
    • Moderating DegreeInfo :D

However, since I only work part time during most of the year and am completely off for several months a year, I still have a bunch of time to force myself to fill. I usually try to make plans with friends (Social Life, listed above) or go outside and walk to the park to do nothing rather than do nothing at home. Maybe I should join a bowling league or a chess club or something? Maybe you could, too?

Interesting! I need to focus myself on some personal goals, mainly of a higher nature. I will need to do some thinking. Thanks for the list, it helped me out, for all things do indeed happen for a reason!

Me, too. Reading that back, it certainly made my life a lot more interesting than it really is. I travel dozens of hours a month on trains and buses to get to work and generally have a lot of time off, with most of my friends being a lot more busy than I am. So, some that stuff I am just doing all by my lonesome.

I watch lots of TV, but not that crappy show. That lame joke is just another reason why.

I'll be talking to other moms about things I/my family does, including reading together every night, and they'll say, "Where do you find time for all that?" and my response is generally, "Well, the only thing our TV is used for is a weekly game night of Wii Sports or Wii Resort with the kids and an occasional DVD from the library...."

We tend to refer to ourselves as "pop-culture illiterate" because we never really know what anyone is talking about when they start mentioning things they watch on TV. It's honestly not that we're anti-TV. We just never seem to find anything worth watching.

(Oh, I should mention, though - my kids love the show Psych and I know that's coming back on soon, so there will be that one hour a week for that.)

TELL me about it! This past Wednesday, someone asked me if I had seen Toy Story 3 yet... YET?! I didn't even know they were making another sequel and it's already out and I'm already the last person to see it?! LOL. I am a huge fan of the first two, so maybe I'll watch it when my library has it on DVD. I really, honestly, have no clue what's on abc's TGIF (do they still have that?) or what new lawyer show is pretending to be The Practice these days.

I do not watch TV much either. I probably spend less than an hour a week watching. I spend a good deal of my time studying for my PhD. I also surf, mountain bike and play guitar mostly at my church.

I usually draw flack when I say this, but I believe that too much TV is a waste of your mind. Those that watch tons of TV are wasting so much time that could be spent on much better pursuits.

OK, gotta go, it's time for the Simpsons!

    TV is crap

For the most part, I don't watch TV either, except for about 20 or 30 minutes tops per day -- and that's usually the History Channel. I can't relate to the fake computerized background laughs on other TV shows because it's all so fake.

I'm a very busy person. Never bored:
    - Work a full-time job
    - Work a part-time job as an online adjunct
    - Workout: 1 or 1.5 hours a day cross-training i.e. bicycling, lap swimming, trampolining (the big kind) and weight-lifting.
    - Making others happy (that's a full-time job in itself)
    - etc...

Not enough time in the day!!!! Who needs crap TV?

I go through phases. My wife and I moved in to one place and forgot to plug in the TV...we noticed 3 months later! There are times when I could put on the TV and watch 4-6 hours of mindless dribble. When I travel, I will always watch "geek TV" (as my wife calls it) which is the History Channel and Discovery Channel.

Responding to the OP's initial question, I am aware of the comment from that show and that kind of attitude worries me. I know it is unjust, but being wrong does not stop public perception. There are plenty of online schools that do nothing to improve that image but there are also many online schools that do as good of a job as any B&M school. It's frustrating to be stereotyped.

I gotta have the Discovery Channel, my wife says I have a man crush on Mike Rowe. I have to watch Dirty Jobs when it's on.

    I don't watch Glee, but....

Of course it does; these jokes are in the show because the writers know they'll resonate with a lot of people. I think one problem here is that people's perception of online education and for-profit education are hopelessly mixed up. That's why you get people saying uninformed things like that the University of Phoenix is an online school, when they have a hundred thousand classroom-based students. That means that when people see the mainstream media bleating thing like "For-profit schools are a rip-off!", many wrongly equate that with there being a problem with learning online.

That's unfortunate, but it doesn't make Glee's writers bad because they capitalize on this. What do you expect? "Tonight on a very special Glee, the kids learn that research shows that online education is just as effective!"

There's no reason why the übersmart Ph.D couldn't have had at least a decent comeback.

Sue: I'll have you know I have my PhD!
    Will: You got it online!
Sue: No, I got it on my wall, as opposed to yours, which is hanging... where???
    Will: *cough, cough* O-N-L-I-N-E...
    Sue: *cough, cough* D-I-S-S-E-R-T-A-T-I-O-N...
    Will: What's that?
Sue: *throws enormous dissertation at Will, knocking him out cold* I guess my throwing arm is not so bad... for a Doctor

Actually, Glee is pretty good. As a high school teacher, I can appreciate what the staff and students go through because I see it everyday. Minus the parts where everyone spontaneously bursts into song... though that would be pretty cool if that happened in real life. Of course, if I were the one singing, that'd be reason enough to close the school. I was in the band for a reason ;-)

"does this say anything about the public perception of online education?"

Not really. Some people look down their noses at state schools. As for online eduction, in some cases its great, on others, not so much. I suppose the same could be said about any format of education.

On the other hand, it could just be a joke and not meant to be taken seriously.
