So I need 6 humanities credits. If religion counts as a humanity, it occurred to me that perhaps I can get cheap self-paced ACE reviewed credit using this avenue. Open to all suggestions, not just religion. It's just an idea.

Does such a thing exist at an affordable price? I'm almost certain I was aware of an ACE reviewed religious school that cost under $50/credit at some point a couple years ago.

NOTE: The intended final recipient of the credit is Excelsior college.

    Thanks for your consideration!

Thanks so much! I see everything I need to know now. While possible it seems these have very little electronic aspect and a large mail correspondence aspect resulting in a less desirable program as well as a muddle of costs and fees combined with the cost of books.

Are there any others like this? Really would prefer a truly self-paced anytime program like straighterline.

Excelsior exams, self study, no assignments, one multiple choice exam
    Bioethics - 3 upper level
Ethics - 3 upper level - does not duplicate the above
Intro to music - 3 lower level
Intro to philosophy - 3 lower level

CLEP exam, self study, no assignments, one multiple choice exam
general humanities - 6 lower level credits

DANTES exam, self study, no assignments, one multiple choice exam
Art of the western world - 3 lower level
Business ethics - 3 upper level
ethics in america - 3 lower level
intro to world religions - 3 lower level

all of these are very inexpensive
the only one I've taken is DANTES intro to world religions
I read religion for dummies and idiots guide to world religions
i passed the exam with room to spare
the most difficult part was differentiating the Buddhist and Hindu names

but if you ask me today anything about any religion other than christian or muslim I wouldn't be able to answer anything

Well, if exams are the only way, I'll do it. I think hell will freeze over before I pay $800 to my community college for a 3 credit class and a couple books that will most likely collect dust.

My daughter just finished CE231 - Intro to Christian Ethics from Seminary Extension to fulfill the Ethics Requirement for Charter Oak. Some comments:

    1. The book for the course "Ethics for a Brave New World" was dirt cheap on Amazon.

    2. The staff at Seminary Extension was responsive and answered questions promptly.

    3. The workbook provided was a good review for tests.

    4. The closed book proctored exam was challenging. The other exams are closed book "honor system."

    5. If you want things graded in a hurry, there is a rush grading fee.

Hmmmm, thanks for the great posts!

I think a closed book proctored exam really takes away from benefits of taking the course vs. just testing out. I will examine the link provided by rar shortly.

I don't know if you thought about this, but I'm in Women of Bible at Clovis right now. I have to say it is the easiest class I have every taken. I had all the work done in the first two or three weeks I have a 100. Its 8 weeks long, no proctors and cheap. You could take Women of the Bible and Men of the Bible for $250. Oh and its RA. Classes start in a month or two for fall.

One other thing, the course required a 10 page research paper. As a parent, that attracted me to the course. I wanted my daughter to learn how to write a research paper! (PS - she got a 98 on the paper).

Got to add one more thing, NO TEXT BOOKS!

I enjoy research papers, actually. That said, anything that will make the course longer is a firm negative at this time.

B4: This is a fantastic idea. And the price is right! Are you saying $250/each or $250/total? No text books is a huge plus. I've never had a proctored exam before, so that is also a plus because I wouldn't have to find/pay one. 2-3 weeks is a good timeline. How soon can the course actually be completed? Do you have to wait for a semester schedule to start/complete courses?

Thanks so much. This sounds just about right!

$250 total for two classes or $125 for each. You have to go the whole 8 weeks. But what you get for the two months is a lot of what you want. The classes are set up in jounal style, you have to turn in 16 in all, only 150 each. They just want to know what you think in your own words.

8 weeks = not so bad. I've just been in a rush after my breakthrough with striaghterline that I just have trouble with the whole actually being on somebody's schedule. This is nearly perfect.

B4, you are awesome. $125/course, no books, gets all my humanities done, ALEKS takes care of the rest and then it's just the info literacy course. No real chance of failure, a subject matter I'm already fairly familiar with. 8 weeks is acceptable. Give me a link to sign up and hopefully I don't have to wait too long. :)

    Any enrollment fees, etc?

Did you forget the course fees? According to the Clovis fall 2010 schedule a 3-unit course in religion is $181, however another 3-unit course can be added for an additional $50 if taken concurrently (i.e $231 for 6-units).

Clovis also appears to offer a third religion course (the Life of Christ) this fall and not listed in their printed schedule:
