I want to know what are the chances that the university of the people will get accredited ...they say that the chances are so limited ..is there a possibility from now till 2015 is there gonna be any accreditation ,I am a little worried because they dont confer degree ,but they should even though its not accredited ...does anyone knows if there gonna be any degrees in the future?

It is my understanding that University of the People is not likely to ever be accredited even though they are pursuing it. I think the limited funds available to the university limits what they can do to meet the criteria. I think that they actually offer degrees though. That's about all I know about it.

From what I read it seemed to be setup with the blessings of the United Nations, do correct me if I am wrong. Surely such a university won't be closing down that fast?!

Indeed, they do not offer degrees. This is, in fact, the main reason why I have a place for my heart in this project. Rather than trying to make a lot of dirty money by selling unaccredited degrees, they are trying their hardest to obtain some form of recognized accreditation before they actually confer anything. In fact, there would be nothing suspicious about them offering some form of completion certificate, but as far as I last checked, they didn't even do that. Unfortunately, accreditation for them is a David/Goliath battle, and this time Goliath still has his "spear and javelin" but David isn't fighting "in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel." (1 Samuel 17:45)

Too bad really, but the University of the People is a utopian concept that is just waiting to have its head squashed by the boot of reality.

I think the best they can hope to do is offer individual courses and have them evaluated by organizations like ACE. That would be far less expensive than going through actual accreditation.

That would be a fantastic idea. I wonder how that process works.

Their intentions were admirable but they were awfully choosy in selecting their instructors with only Ivy League ones on the list as far as I know. Thus, it may be presenting something that is not and gives the impression that it is full of ideas but lacking somewhat in execution. Of course these are my observations which can be proven wrong.

Ivy League profs? I don't understand how they could get paid. I would assume that the classes are automatic without much need for a human to grade papers and such. This is just my supposition though.

It IS a great idea. How nice that would be; you need a class in some discipline and just sign up and take it for free. Really great for someone who does not need a degree in a subject but just wants to learn. I would think some employers might even honor some of that. Once again, just supposition on my part.

It is good that once in a while, there are some guys with utopian ideas to shake things up, who knows, one may just succeed and we have a new World Order where education is concerned.

I was just reading that University of the People is backed by the United Nations. It has also entered into a research partnership with Yale University. Those facts still do not make it accredited, but they do improve the image of the school. I doubt that it will ever be accredited and thus will never be useful for a real degree. It's still pretty cool though.

Did the UN become useful when I wasn't looking, or something?

Anyway, who said it was closing? The site is still up and seems active.

They were backed and founded by a rich dude. He has lost a great deal of his fortune in the last years so they are still running off the 1 million he had originally put in to the school. He said recently he would be putting no more money into the endeavor. I applied and was accepted to the school a few months back. At the time I thought there might have been a chance they would get accredited. They have not even applied to any RA's. I got to thinking that why would I submit myself to a great deal of work with nothing to show for it in the end? Yes I would get an education but I would not be able to use it.

I'm quite sure they will go for some non-us accreditation agency first. Seems to be easier (and cheaper, and less problematic i.e. no conflict with tuition based institutions) to get the buy in of some foreign education ministry. Might be a win-win since some ambitious minister is going to be able to demonstrate a look-how-innovative-we-are position.
