No, we don't need anything like that at my school. If a kid misbehaves we just use the defibrillator on them. Just kidding!
Actually, I see plenty of use for school disciplinarians. They can be the ones to flip the dial on the pain machine*. *a la George Orwell's 1984
I recently spoke to a high school disciplinarian (official title is Dean of Male Students), and he is a retired Marine Corps Colonel who has an M.B.A. but had no prior experience in education. Personally, I think he is perfect for the job, and based on how the students interacted with him, I think they agree.
I've learned from teaching Jr. high students that it's all about the atmosphere you create. There is something about good teachers that makes kids not want to mess with them. I am getting better at it each year and I think a retired Corps Colonel would probably have no trouble at all. You don't mess with those guys!
From what I've observed in Virginia, it seems that most assistant principals are the ones who handle discipline. They are the ones who suspend kids and such. They have to have a license endorsement in administration, which plenty of schools offer. -Matt
