Is it worth it to pay $30k for a Master in Professional Accounting that is recognized by Australian accounting bodies or is there any cheaper alternative via distance learning? 30k seems kinda steep to me :(

Why would you do it through distance, you know it lowers your chance of employment

How do you know? Many people on this board have had zero problems securing employment and advancement in their current positions with their distance degrees.

I do believe that a certified accountant is a certified accountant whether distance education or not does not make any difference

It does not necessarily lower your chance of employment. Some employers will not honor a DL degree, but most will.

In Australia, this is definitely the case and nobody will ever query you over the issue of distance learning or not. This issue appears to relate to the USA.
I assume that you are interested in an Australian degree then you will be practising in Australia or with an Australian company.

I would think careful about where you intend to practice accountancy as I understand that accounting standards and taxation issues may differ.

Having said that, you may try University of Southern Queensland. Melbourne University may be another, Deakin University, Swinburne University, University of Central Queensland may also be fruitful. Also try Open Universities. A Bachelor of Accounting is an accredited accounting degree for CPA and Chartered Accountant status.

    Professional Recognition

"The Bachelor of Accounting is accredited by the two major Australian accounting professional bodies, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and CPA Australia."

I hope that this is useful.

Hi ebbwvale, deeply appreciated, this is certainly the information I am seeking. I am seeking to practice in Australia, the information is just handy! Though still looking for cheaper programs as such programs aren't that cheap in Australia through the universities, though Swinburne is within walking distance.

Further to ebbwvale's post, I believe the University of South Australia (UniSA), where I graduated with two degrees, is the award-granting uni for the OUA Bachelor of Accounting program, and I have done some of those courses such as Microeconomics and Accounting, Decisions and Accountability etc. as part of my studies toward the Bachelor of Management (Marketing) degree.

I have to say that my first-hand experience indicates that the curriculum was largely solid and the tutors as well as the teaching lecturers had been mostly helpful and responsive to students. Depending on the actual courses, workload and number of students, most UniSA courses tend to have a designated part-time tutor for OUA students but a few courses with normally smaller number of enrolled students tend to appoint the course lecturer being the OUA tutor for those specific courses.

If anyone requires further information on UniSA etc., I will be more than happy to shed some light.

Good luck and all the best, jackrussell.

I am not advertising but I know UNE has a good masters program in accounting that is accepted by NIA Melbourne. Should you wish to follow this route, this may present you with another option.

The cheapest thing to get into Australian accounting bodies is ACCA. ACCA is recognized by CPA Australia and the Institute of public accountants of Australia.

ACCA is also recognized in Canada by CGA.

ACCA is not a degree but a certification that is based on examinations. No need to take courses.

Other recognized certifications in Australia are CPA Ireland and CA India.

I forgot to mention that there are many Universities that offer "top up" programs that allow you to get a masters degree if you hold an ACCA qualification by completing a dissertation. These programs are around 5K USD. An ACCA qualification would cost you 2K USD so the full masters would be less than 7K USD.

The catch here is that ACCA is not an easy qualification to get, exams are difficult and might take more than one try to get.
