Is the certificateion offered by this institution called" Certified Internet Webmaster" a legitimate qualification by which I would be allowed to professionally create webpages?

 

Being able to "professionally create" web pages does not depend on receiving the CIW certification. Rather it depends upon your training and ability to create quality web pages. I have created thousands of web pages and have served as Webmaster for a college and a number of organizations--all without CIW certification. Having said that,I can state that Prosoft CIW is a legitimate professional certification.

All of their tutorials are free. As Anthony said, you don't necessarily need "certification." A website portfolio of example sites you've built would go a long way, (assuming they're good!) and you can put that together on your own, once you know how.

In addition, if you just want to "prove" yourself - the W3Schools does offer certification, at $75 a test, in HTML, JavaScript, XML, ASP, and PHP. I didn't compare that to the cost of the site you listed, but if it's less, it might be worth looking into.

One last thought: It is my humble opinion that web design is more an art than a science. What I mean by that is personally I can put together a webpage in HTML just using a text file to write the code, because I do know how, but I would never call myself a professional because I have the graphics/design talents of your average dead goldfish. Yeah. I'm that bad. Heh. Even live goldfish and above-average dead goldfish are better than I am. If you've got a knack for it, though, I would think it's a handy skill to have. (The only question I have about it is whether or not software programs will reach a level of quality someday that *anyone* can put out a decent - *ahem* NOT FrontPage-like - website and make programmers almost obsolete.)

 

It's not like I haven't made a site before, I just wanted to study computer science to prove my qualifications but since there are legitimate qualifications I don't have to have a degree in a subject I'm not that interested in.
A follow up question:
Is there such a certificate in media editing, and maybe one in graphic editing (photoshop)?
