Hi there,

I am considering the M.Ed. in Adult and Organizational Learning from Northeastern University. An alternative would be a similar degree from Colorado State University (Fort Collins, not the Global Campus).

The Colorado State degree would be from their College of Education, whereas the NU one would come the College of Professional Studies. I am wondering if there is a difference in public perception between the CPS and NU's other programs. Is there a risk that people might not accept my degree as a "real" NU degree?

    NU reputation

    Hello,
I live in NJ and I have several friends that have attended Northeastern grad and undergrad. They all have only positive things to say about the experience. NU has a large alumni network in the in NJ, NY,CT, PA area. Either way you can't go wrong with NU, but its expensive.

You have left a lot unsaid, inparticular which program you are looking at. CSU's Education department offers several degree programs through the office of Continuing Education. Or are you talking about attending in person on campus?

Sorry, I didn't think this was important since my question is about NU CPS. The CSU degree I am looking at is this one: Adult Education and Training (AET) (M.Ed.) - Online | Colorado State University Continuing Education It is offered through the School of Education.

In full disclosure, I'll be starting the Northeastern EdD program in a few weeks.

I think it will depend on what your goals are. A private New England university or a public state university are probably about on par. I think either will look better than (and be less expensive than) a Walden, U of P or Capella. Look at delivery method, academic approach, cost and schedules and how long it will take you to get through. Depending on what your goals are afterward, it may figure in.

Northeastern has a strong reputation as a practitioner's college. Even their undergrads do externships and work co-ops to highlight this. If you're looking for a more academic track, although I'm not familiar with the program personally, the other program might be a better bet.

It's not like we walk around listing the specific college within a university anyway. You won't be saying Northeastern CPS. You'll be saying Northeastern. It's been around for forever. Their admin is a little slow (okay, very slow), but from what I've seen, their academic programs are sound.

If anything, the fact that they've close applications until this time next year for their EdD program when it used to be about 2 weeks for a decision tells you that they're certainly gaining in popularity when it comes to admissions.

Thanks for your assessment, Caulyne, I appreciate it. The reason I was asking the question about public perception is that I read somewhere online that CPS students are treated differently than other NU students. Obviously, people say a lot on the Internet, and everything else I've read about NU sounds great.

You could probably look up every HES (Harvard Extension) thread and see the exact same garbage with people looking down on it. Northwestern is a great school with a very high ranking. I'm interested in their DL MPPA but I'm worried about future employment with it. Otherwise I'd be in for the long haul. Do you know if the transcripts reflect the specific college or that it's taken online? :D

Are you aware that we are talking about Northeastern? Not quite Northwestern, but still a darn good school. ;) Northeastern says their diplomas obtained online are exactly the same as the ones on-campus students get.

Sorry I'm an idiot. :( Let me go read a little about Northeastern so I can have an intelligent, informed comment. All this popup ad stuff has my brain fried...yeah that's it! :D

The only people that seem to care about differentiating the CPS students/degrees from others offered at any university tend to be the traditional students.

Prime example; a previous commenter mentioned that people talk trash about HES all the time. My roommate was just admitted into a PhD program here at Harvard based on the work he has done at HES (and he's only half way through the program, no thesis written, 5 classes completed).

My point is, employers will recognize Northeastern as a solid university. Don't worry to much about what college a university houses a particular program under.

That's certainly good advice, AUTiger00, thank you. Of course, there is always someone who thinks s/he's better than others, and it's really not worth paying attention to these people. It does seem, though, that the CPS has it's own alumni program (Does that mean CPS alumni are not part of the regular club?), and CPS students do not seem counted towards total university enrollment. I may be wrong here though.

For me, it seems like I'm going to become a CSU Ram. The school just seems to be a good fit for me: good program, decent state school, affordable tuition, and a football program (not the best one recently ;)). What's not to love about that?
