How to Apply for Adjunct Positions - ProfHacker - The Chronicle of Higher Education

Let me add that on some campuses, your application has to be screened through Affirmative Action before it can be considered. If that's the case, give yourself plenty time before the semester starts.

Second, sometimes a vita is not enough and a school may require that you complete their application before you can be considered. Find out.

Finally, sometimes adjunct jobs open at the last minute. A course may have unexpectedly high enrollment, for example so a new section is opened. Be available to accept an appointment when this happens.

Some schools are under pressure to hire a certain number of individuals from minority segments of the population. They may want to hire you, but if you are a caucasian male and they need a few more people from a minority, you may get passed over. In a way, it's a good thing to make sure everyone is getting a fair chance, but in some ways, well...everyone is not getting a fair chance! I'm all for absolute equality for all racial groups in the US, but I'm not sure this is the best way to achieve it.

    Online Teaching Thread?

There's useful info here. Should this be moved to the section that has other helpful info about online teaching and learning?

I've never been on an Affirmative Action Committee but I have been the head of the Recruitment Committee several times. My impression is that the AAC checks as to whether the search (eg: advertisements) for the position made an active effort to make it known to minority people.

We had to pay to advertise in these obscure minority publications that never yielded any candidates but I guess were accepted as evidence that we were making an effort.

Before Affirmative Action was outlawed by Constitutional Amendment in California, before a person could be put in the adjunct pool for my department, the application had to be approved by the AAC.
