Better to wait for it to gain some accreditation first. From its web site: Victorville International University is still a new University. The University is under the jurisdiction of the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education and it is subject to the requirements of the Bureau Act. The University claims no accreditation from any agency. The application for approval has not been reviewed by the California Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education.
I live in California and have never heard of a legitimate higher educxtion institution called 'Victorville International University'. See this earlier thread: http://forums.degreeinfo.com/online-dl-teaching/31113-american-centered-university-legit.html VIU seems to have appeared on the internet during the interregnum in which post-secondary educxtion in California was unregulated. It hasn't been inspected or approved by the new BPPE to my knowledge. A 'Chronicle of Higher Educxtion' news item mentions VIU getting a listing on the Dept. of Educxtion's EROD directory (it simply lists educxtion-related businesses without attempting to screen them) and then boasting to prospective students that it was recognized by the US Dept of Educxtion, with a .gov page to "prove" it. EROD has since cleaned up its list a bit. http://chronicle.com/article/Education-Departments-Online/64686/ (The comments following the 'Chronicle' news item are as interesting as the story. There's an empassioned defense of California University FCE.) California University Foreign Credential Evaluators (subject of many previous threads) claims VIU as an 'affiliate' and continues to tout the supposed Dept. of Educxtion 'recognition': http://www.cufce.org/affiliatedinstitutions.htm Here's a cute page in which VIU is trolling for agents willing to sign up foreign students for them. They apparently pay $10,000 per 100 students enrolled. http://www.myedagent.com/profile/VICTORVILLEINTERNATIONALUNIV?xg_source=activity
It is difficult to determine if this VCU is an attempt at starting a legitimate university or, as Chip says, an "unwonderful" school. Either way, being unaccredited, a degree from there would have very limited utility.
I didn't notice that. They stuck "edu" into part of their URL to fake a true .edu site. Wow, that's pretty lame. Now there is no question that this is an "unwonderful" school. The misspelled words let you know that they must not have an English dept, or maybe that they don't speak English!
The university is owned by a Nigerian (FYI: NIGERIA IS THE MOST CORRUPT COUNTRY ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET). I think their target market is Nigerians in Nigeria who will settle for any school outside their shores since 90% of universities in Nigeria, which are owned and funded by the Nigerian government, barely stay open due to corruption, and inability for the government of Nigeria to adequately fund them and pay staff salaries. Overall, in my opinion, the institution is aimed at folks from countries that pay very little attention to accreditation etc. If any one in the U.S is serious with their education, I will stay away from it for now, at least until some sort of verifiable and legitimate accreditation is attained.
All that is fine and I respect that idea, but it also seems like there is some deceptive stuff going on here too.
Victorville I hope it's a distance program. If you're ever been to Victorville, you'll want to keep your distance.
