How has a DL doctorate helped you?

I have a question for all of you DL doctors: How has a DL doctorate (from any school) helped you? Are you glad you did it?

I'm just interested in what the feelings are out there. We have had a thread about how a "big 3" degree has helped careers and one asking if a DL doctorate is a waste of time, but no question exactly like this that I recall.

My DL (well, at least short residency) doctorate from Nova Southeastern has allowed me to move from industry to a tenured position (Associate Professor) and most recently department head.

Without this degree I would never have made the transition. How viable this doorway is today, however, is not totally clear.

    Regards - Andy

Yes, Andy, I think you are going to be one of the few who have parlayed a DL degree into a tenured position. I'm sure there was some exceptional talent on your part involved there.

Thank you for your kind words. I believe that circumstances are a big part of my success. When I earned my DBA, I was working part-time for a school that needed another full-time faculty member. Things worked out well for me.

    Regards - Andy

I suppose that this thread might not get too many posts because I think most BB members involved in a doctoral program are still in the process.

Don't worry, you can always count on me to have nothing to say, and yet say it anyway. :D
Actually, I think most members are intrigued by a more negative sounding thread like the one called "Isn't a DL doctorate a waste of time?" I like how you flipped it around into a positive, but whether through biology, psychology or sociology most of us seem to be more attentive to a negative, sensationalist headline over a benign, positive one (for a neat experiment, the next time you open a newspaper, try to see on what page, and of how much content, is the first overtly positive article). Maybe you can try something more like: "DL Doctorates... How Do You Cope With the Shame Your Degree Has Brought You?" [IMG]

    Got me:
    -- Two adjunct jobs
    -- Campus Chair for UoP
-- Guest lecturer at other schools
    -- Tripled my income
    -- Consulting gigs
-- A host of other opportunities to teach, write, testify, etc.
    -- Several progressive government jobs

How much can be attributed to the doctorate? Almost all.

Oh that's just too funny! "How do you cope with the shame..." I would almost post that thread just to see what everyone else says.

I think you brought a lot of talent and experience to the table on top you your doctorate. You and Andy both. If I can do a small fraction as well as you, I will be delighted.

Distance education has been good to me. After completing my undergraduate at a B&M I graduated with my degree and a huge amount of debt. My guess if I did not continued my education I would have still been in debt. Distance education has made me extremely competitive in my profession. I do not know what doors my PHD will open for me, but presently I am able to meet my mandatory professional development.

I am now the envy of all my neighbors

Prior to being awarded an online doctorate, I had low self-esteem, but after receiving the doctorate, my self-esteem shot through the roof.

My shoulders used to slouch forwards and inwards, but now they are naturally upright with pride.

Within 10 days of receiving the degree, I lost two inches off my waist and gained 1/2 inch on my chest.

I was a broom boy (janitor) at work, but after getting the degree, my boss immediately elevated me to the rank of senior staff and increased my pay to over 100,000k from minimum wage.

Prior to receiving the degree, I was a loner and a social outcast at parties, but now I have a charismatic personality and my buddies describe me as a "chick magnet."

I am now the envy of my neighbors.

I am extremely pleased with what a 100% online degree has done for me. It can do it for you too!!!

7 Reasons to AVOID Getting a Doctorate

    1.
The doctoral process will demean you to the point of depression and lack of self-concept. The sooner its over, the sooner you can recover.

    2.
    The ammount
of reading you have to do, with your neck and back bent over, will malign your natural posture. The body is, however, capable of correcting itself once you have stopped torturing it.

    3.
The accademic life is a sedentary life. Every day will be spent indoors, sitting in a chair for hours at a time.

    4.
Holding a doctorate will rob you of the joy of working indepedently, and force you to take a job which brings you closer to your boss.

    5.
You spend so much time researching theory and postulation that you forget how to interact within the sphere of reality. It may take much effort and time to overcome this.

    6.
It will turn your community against you.

    7.
It will result in permanent memory lapse- causing you to forget how much you hated every second of it.

My income doubled because of my doctorate. In addition to my regular salary as an IT/Information Security Architect (more than 100K per annum), I also make an additional 75K as a fulltime online professor for a university. I also make another 15K as an adjunct instructor for another school.

Ok, let me try to put this all together. It will make me extremely proud of myself, make me rich, make me a chick magnet and cure any cancer I might have. The down side; a DL doctorate will make me a fat, lazy, recluse who has burned out his grey matter and is no longer able to interact with others or to think properly. Hmmm....sounds pretty good to me!
