I want to study MFA Creative Writing but I live oustide the US and as such cannot participate in any low residency. Is there any university in the world where I can study MFA Creative Writing totally online? I am a writer. I did my first degree in Mass Communication.

Actually, UT-El Paso has a fully on line MFA in Creative Writing.

    It can be found here.

Hey that's a fantastic grab! The University of Texas brand outshines both of the alternatives (IMO).

Not an MFA but you could study writing and English but this MAIS at WNMU has fewer courses than an MFA and low tuition costs.

National University No Residency Online MFA

    Hi Tolbia,

I am the Lead Faculty member of National University's fully-online MFA program.

You can learn more on the program on our website at

Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing | National University

We are one of the few fully online MFA programs that offer focuses in fiction, poetry, literary nonfiction, and screenwriting. We are the oldest fully online MFA program. We have been in business since 2005, so our program has been developed and improved on for a long time. We have no residency requirement and our classes are online classes based off of the on ground model. We don't do the correspondence method that many of the low-residency programs do. You are in fully-developed online classes that have weekly workshops, reading discussions and activities. See the website for a full description. We also have rolling enrollment so prospective students can apply and begin any given month. If you would like more information, drop me an email at [email protected]

    Best,

    Frank.

I am curious as to whether you ended up pursuing any of these options and, if so, what your experiences were. I am also interested in a fully online MFA program.

I second the Creative Writing/English at WNMU...it's a great program even if the 16 week semesters seem really long (to me :) ). Program is among the cheapest that I know of if you keep to 2 courses/semester...like under $8000 for the whole program and it's a respectable if little known State school.

Is there an advantage to the MFA over a MAIS (master of arts independent studies) seems to be about the same to me.

Have you completed this program or are you in the midst of it? Do you know the minimum and maximum times in which the program must be completed? Thanks!

The MFA is typically 60 semester hours, and is considered a terminal degree.

An MFA that would give advanced standing for something like the WNMU MAIS – similar to how some education doctorates will give advanced standing for EdS graduates? – would be awesome.

Yep...I sometimes get "independent" on the mind.

If this thread is going to morph into a "low-residency" MFA thread you'll find that there are many, many more choices. The residency components have a strong tendency to consist of week-long grad seminars featuring well known writers. I have imagined enrolling in such a program and using the residencies almost as a kind of vacation where you might be able to slip off to the beach/mountains/whatever at the end of the day. Alternately, you might find one close enough to home so that you could actually go home at night. While I recognize the value of a 100% DL program, this is a situation where a limited residency program might actually be superior (if you can manage it at all).

Here is a thread I started on this topic back in 2008

Yes, and the MDiv is a 90 hour master's.

Does anyone have experience with or further insight into this program? Thanks!
