The latest direction that my degree research has taken me is to look for some independent study undergraduate courses that I can do this summer. I am looking for the LEAST EXPENSIVE options out there (eg, if there are any community colleges with tuition around $100/credit, that would be nice!!!).

I have done some digging into old threads, but most of the links do not work anymore. BYU, at ~150/credit is REALLY nice for a University. What else do you know of?

Specifically, I am looking for Psychology and Sociology classes, however, if you are unaware of what courses are offered, 'tis quite alright, just let me know which schools you are aware of and I can check the course listings myself.

LSU has a large selection and is very cheap. Their courses are mostly the old-style correspondence type, but to me that's a plus (no deadlines). The cost is currently $262 per course.

Clovis offers a few courses in the areas you are looking for - cost is $184 for a 3 credit course (or $61 per unit)

You should make sure that any independent study courses (that is, if the title of the course is "independent study" as in AMU PSYCH490 or CSUDH SOC494) you find are transferable to the college you plan to attend.

BYU has probably the largest and most established program and transferring the units should be no problem. University of Nebraska (Lincoln), Indiana University, Portland State and University of Colorado (Boulder) also have independent study programs.

    THANKS EVERYONE!!!!

I think that LSU just might save the day! That tuition is unbelievable, and there are plenty of Soc and Psych courses as well!!!!

Also, I am strongly considering taking 2 courses with Clovis this fall- depending on a few factors (like if I decide to start filling my "residency" with Columbia in the fall or spring, or if I am ready to take semester-structured courses).

The only thing with LSU is that the turnabout (at least when my daughter started her Latin class) was 3 - 4 weeks per assignment.

If the school you intend to transfer these courses to accepts ACE credit, check out Penn Foster. They are very inexpensive, most courses are ACE approved, and their turn around is way faster than LSU.

Columbia College only accepts 50% of your degree from non-traditional credit (including ACE) when I apply, I will have already 60 credits from AP, CLEP and ACE. I am, however, not 100% set on them (although I do really like what I see from them) and am looking for another school that has both of my majors.

Wow, this is terrible - does this mean she had to wait 3-4 weeks from the time you turn in your last assignment until she could take the final?

She gave up on the Latin course at LSU. She completed a Latin Class using Skype and an online platform. She didn't earn college credit, but she loved the class. She plans on taking additional Latin Courses at Southern Virginia University in the Fall.

I'm curious as to why she is taking Latin.

I know Latin is very useful to scholars researching documentation prior to about 100 years ago. In those days Latin used to be the international language including that of scientists. Here is Isaac Newton's Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica.

The univeristy of idaho has independent study courses for english 101 and 102. I completed both, and they were easy. The great thing is they don't have final exams. The bad thing is that english 101 doesn't recieve a letter grade (A,B,C,D) on the transcript. Therefore, it didn't transfer to the college I'm attending now. English 102 has a letter grade and transferred. I don't understand why UI does this.

I'm looking into either taking the CLEP for english or taking enlish 101 over again at another institution that doesn't require exams for their english classes. I've only found one that is the most convenient. It's at Ohio university. I asked them if their english course recieves a letter grade on the transcript, and they said yes. Futhermore, I asked the college I'm attending right now if it will transfer, and they said yes. I'll be taking this course if the CLEP doesn't work out for me.

University of Alaska, Fairbanks, has a fairly wife range of undergrad distance courses, including some in Psych. Some are semester-based, and others are year-long. I both enjoyed and was challenged by the one course I took from them several years ago. Undergrad credits are $141 for lower-level and $159 for upper-level, which is a rather good deal.

    Peace,

    Matt

Looking at this site it appears the total cost per credit is $189, $242, and $402 for lower division, upper division, and graduate level courses respectively.
