Friday afternoon I successfully defended my PhD dissertation at the University of Florida titled, "An Analysis of Real Estate Transactions and Socioeconomic Variables on Agricultural Lands in Polk County, Florida" (don't all run to the library at once now.)
yay, I can sleep now. I'm going to try not to be burned up with envy. :) Be satisfied with what you have, but never be satisfied with what you are. -

yay, I can sleep now. Edowave, how long did it take, start to finish, to complete your dissertation? A year? More? Be satisfied with what you have, but never be satisfied with what you are. -
Wonderful! Now deal with the dean's office--getting your dissertation into its final form--and off you go!
Congratulations, doctor. -

After I passed my quals, I did the one thing everyone told me not to do: I started a full-time job. I figured I could finish the dissertation during my "free time", but my job didn't really leave me any. Then I got engaged and moved to New Jersey.
In the end it took me about 3 years to do the dissertation. Looking back I can't believe how fast the time flew by. It really shouldn't have taken no longer than a year. I credit the wonderful members on this board for keeping me going. Reading everyone's success stories is what pushed me to "get it done."
As for the "what's next" question, right now I'm now dealing with wedding planning. After that settles down, I wouldn't mind teaching an online course or two. (to pay for said wedding.)

Teachers play an important role in fostering the intellectual and social development of children during their formative years. The education that students acquire is key to determining the future of those students. Whether in elementary or high schools or in private or public schools, teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop into responsible adults.
Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using classroom presentations or individual instruction to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, and English. They plan, evaluate, and assign lessons; prepare, administer, and grade tests; listen to oral presentations; and maintain classroom discipline. Teachers observe and evaluate a student's performance and potential. They are increasingly asked to use new assessment methods
•Public school teachers must be licensed, which typically requires a bachelor's degree and the completion of an approved teacher education program; private school teachers do not have to be licensed but may still need a bachelor's degree.
•Job prospects are best for teachers in high-demand fields, such as mathematics, science, and bilingual education, and in less desirable urban or rural school districts.
•Teachers must have the ability to communicate, inspire trust and confidence, and motivate students, as well as understand students' educational and emotional needs. | | | | | | BS, MS, PhD - University of Florida

What a fine thing you have done, Ed. Sincere congratulations.
Permit me to remind people that you are also an alumnus of the Heriot-Watt MBA program (part online, part on campus) . . . and also a survivor, as it were, of alt.education .distance.
(Just for the heck of it, I just had a look at alt.education .distance. I guess user groups never die, unless the founder cancels them. So there are 29,360 messages, none relating to distance education for years . . . and Rita Laws' FAQs haven't been updated since 2003. Wonder what name the truly evil "Factwatcher" is using now.) | | | | | American InterContinental University Online | American InterContinental University
