The University of South Africa (soon to be the Open Learning University of South Africa) offers one, though you'll want to get a letter stating in advance that you will not be required to travel to Pretoria.

Northcentral University, a candidate for regional accreditation, may also be an option down the road.

    Strada:
I have been searching for on information on a related subject for sometime. I might suggest that you consider the Fielding Graduate Institute. It is often referred to as the Fielding Institute. The web site is www.fielding.edu. The feedback I have received on it has been positive, recognizing that it is a distance learning institution. You might want to consult several different universities in several different states, their psychology departments of course, and ask each to tell you if they have heard of the Fielding Institute, tell you something about the perceptions of the institution, the perception of its graduates in psychology, and challenges a graduate from that institution might face (i.e., Distance Education, Not Ivy League, Not traditional). See what they say. If you can live with the results of your informal survey, get accepted to the institution, and the program meets your needs, go for it.

    Response:

Primarily, we are not aware as to what what area of Psychology specialization Strada wishes to pursue, therefore, making any recommendations for specific schools premature!

Although Fielding offers a doctoral program in Clinical Psychology, APA approved, which is obviously very important for career and professional reasons, it is also heavily research oriented rather than practice oriented and this needs to be considered to determine whether it is congruent with one's needs, interests and goals. In addition, a significant residency period is needed which is an issue that Strada has noted he is trying to avoid.

So, once again if Strada wishes to clarify more specifically the area of Psychology he wishes to study and his feelings re: heavy research versus practice oriented degrees (if he is interested in a clinical area of study), this would be helpful in offering suggestions re: specific schools to explore.

    Thankyou all for replying

I do apologise for not being specific -
I am heavily interested in reserach

The area which i wish to specialise in is human development esp in the area of Hypnosis and Therapy

My current reasearch is on the use of Hypnosis in 'slowing down and eradication of cancerous growth '

and i wish to continue at a Phd level on a similiar vein eg Pain and Hypnosis etc

Having contacted the the South African University i was pleased to note that there is a professor who has a similar interest -

Having already contacted the Fielding Indtitute and recieved their current prospectus - i am pleased to report that they are considered a legitimate organisation - THEY HAVE AN EXCELLENT REPUTATION - however there is no one on their academic staff who can sucessfully mentor me on my chosen area - SO I KEEP ON LOOKING

For those who wish to practice in the UK as a Psychologist:

I have contacted the Britsh Psychologial Society (BPS) who regulate the profession and they are to send me further information on the validity of international Phd programmes as it applies to them : will keep u informed as and when i get further information!

    Response:

    Hi Strada,

There are several issues that may be benficial to clarify re: your stated academic interests.

Primarily, can you please clarify how your interest in Human Development is related to hypnosis, therapy and research in "slowing down and eradication of cancer"? It is important to narrow down more specifically how these stated areas of interest interface and relate to your stated academic objectives.

When you say you are currently involved in research on the use of hypnosis in the eradication of cancer, in what context and academic discipline is this study being conducted? What academic credentials do you currently have and in what field of study that enables you to engage in such activities? Are you interested in the field of psychology, such as experimental or health, or in hypnotherapy? Does your interest primarily focus on the psychobiological aspects of brain physiology or primarily on the field of hypnotherapy? Etc, etc.

Providing a more clearly and focused description of your future academic interest imay lead to our better understanding the direction you are attempting to achieve.and may lead to some viable suggestions from posters.

There is always the RA Ph.D. being offered at a distance by the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. http://www.itp.edu/programs/phd_gp.html

In my lay understanding the transpersonal goal of mind-body awareness seems to fit into the hypnotherapy - wellness paradigm.

This sounds delightful, John! Do you know whether or not it's an entirely nonresident program...?
