I just got out the military and decided to move on to my BS in Business focusing on Project Management. I am looking at several online schools and since money is an issue with me, of course I am going to pick the cheapest one which so far seems to be Devry. They provide eight week courses which is also a plus with me. Has anyone else attended Devry? If so, what did you think?

Why don't you just go to a mill... you can have a degree in a few weeks!!!

Is DeVry a degree mill? I thought they were RA?

Isn't this the same Devry that is affiliated with Keller Graduate School of Management?

I'm starting to think you are lost regarding this whole accreditation thing. You have made a couple of posts that indicate this.

    This is from: http://www.learning.gov.ab.ca/college/postsecsystem/postsecinst/postsecinst.asp#

"Alberta has seven private colleges accredited to grant specific degrees at the university level. The Private Colleges Accreditation Board sets conditions to be met by private colleges that wish to offer programs leading to bachelor degrees. The Board reviews program proposals and makes recommendations to the Minister of Learning. Institutions are authorized to grant degrees through approval of an Order in Council."

The DeVry Institute of Technology-Calgary Campus, is one of the seven private colleges authorised by the Minister of Learning to grant degrees.

If we're talking about DeVry Tech, who used to offer computer repair courses with tacky ads on TV, yes they are (somewhat surprisingly) regionally accredited. They used to have a rather seedy reputation, but one would have to assume that they've cleaned up their act considerably since they're now RA.

DeVry Inc.(Publicly Traded) is an excellent institution that offers Bachelor/Master degree in various fields. DeVry Inc. owns and operates DeVry Institutes, Keller Graduate School of Management (KGSM), Center for Corporate Education (CCE) and Becker Conviser Professional Review .

There are 23 DeVry Institutes campuses in the United States and Canada. De Vry is one of the largest private higher-education systems in North America.

Keller has 46 sites located in major metropolitan areas including the Online Education Center and more than 9,000 students. Keller is one of the nation's largest part-time graduate schools for working adults.

Becker Conviser Professional Review is a leading international provider of Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination preparation courses similar to Kaplan.

Most importantly, DeVry Inc. has successfully achieved Regionally Accreditation Status for all of their schools (DeVry Institution/Keller Graduate School of Mgmt). Overall, I think they are a solid choice.

You have thought correctly. If you want to understand the thought process of Walter/Ken, just remember:

US Schools (except Ivy League): BAD

    UK/Australian/South African Schools: GOOD

It's quite simple, if not especially enlightened.

Ken Lewchuk, who is also known as Walter Rodgers, returned from an impossible mission recently. He was pursuing HW-MBA but the exams were too tough for him. He happens to be one of those individuals that are not good at taking exams. He has been having nightmares after the HW-MBA ordeal. Please don't take him serious.

For what it's worth, I have a friend who attended DeVry in Columbus, Ohio years ago and who is now earning around $70,000 a year as a computer programmer. Even my nephew who graduated from the University of Dayton (an excellent school)with an MIS degree isn't getting paid as well. Devry might have had/or still may have a seedy reputation, but they seem to prepare students well for what the industry is looking for. I'm close to finishing a CIS degree from Excelsior College, and I doubt that I have as much success as my friend has had with his seedy DeVry degree.

Also for what it's worth. I have a friend who graduated from Devry in the early 80's with a BS degree in Electronics. Has had no problem in securing and holding positions in the telecom field. He is currently working for one of the top 3 telecom equipment manufactures as a product marketing director with an annual salary and bonus in the $150,000 range. Note, I'm not implying that this can be YOUR result with a Devry degree.

For what it is worth, I attended DeVry from 1986 to 1987 in Woodbridge, NJ. I did not even graduate and was offer a job as an Assitant QC Manager working on projects for the DOD and NASA. The school really prepares you for the work world. I can't say enough god things about DeVry.

Not only regionally accredited. DeVry Tech is also accredited by ABET.

ABET in turn is a coalition of professional organizations in engineering and technology, such as the IEEE, come together to create an accrediting association.

Was their reputation "seedy", exactly? Or was DeVry known as what it was: a trade and vocational school?

And regarding computer repair: somebody's gotta fix the damn things.

I do think that DeVry is being held down by its own trade-school past though. No matter how much they expand into being a university level engineering school, they still carry those down-market associations in many people's minds.

I think the best thing that DeVry Tech could do to upgrade its image would be to change its name.

This board would be much more beneficial if it provided information concerning a schools reputation rather than merely its accreditation status.

Devry Inc. is preparing to make a name change to Devry University Center, which will combine both Devry Institute/Keller Graduate School Management to offer Bachelor/Master level degrees for each of the respective University Centers.

As far as their reputation, it has improved tremendously among the business arena.

  17. DeVry is not really an Engineering School. They are an Engineering Technology school. Only one of their degrees is ABET accredited on a few campus. The BS in Electrical Engineering Technology is the only offering accredited. For ABET-TAC accredation, the program at each campus must be visited.

There is a huge difference between a degree in Engineering Technology and one in Engineering. If the reputation of the name is important to the individual, the better choice may be Excelsior. Both schools offer BSET programs.

    Regards,

    Dick
