Ok, I know this is a long shot- and if anyone stumbles on a DL Organic Chem summer session I'd love to hear about it.

There were 2 organic chem classes talked about in 2007 here, but they were non lab or too few credits.

    Hi Jennifer,

This offering, from the University of New England's College of Osteopathic Medicine, might work for you (includes a lab, albeit a virtual one): http://www.une.edu/com/online/organic/index.cfm. The course is (typically) 16 weeks long, BUT you may start at any time, and finish at your own pace! :)

    Best of luck!

If you need to take organic chemistry to fulfill requirements for a program in health or science, I would check carefully before enrolling in a DL organic chemistry class. Organic chemistry courses typically include a strong laboratory component. A "virtual laboratory", available by DL, may or may not satisfy your program's expectations.

Realistically, there are limits to how far you can go with "virtual" environments. I once knew a guy who conducted flight simulator training for a major airline. The simulator setups were incredibly detailed and realistic, and the instructor raved about the value of the training opportunities that were provided. No one doubts that "virtual" flight training is extremely effective as a supplement to "real" flight training.

But the key word here is "supplement" -- as opposed to "substitute". Nobody would hire a pilot that has been trained exclusively on flight simulators, without any experience flying a real plane. And nobody would hire a chemist that has been trained exclusively with virtual chemicals, without ever handling the real thing.

Yes, I will check. Just a fine point, not all distance learning science labs are virtual- I have completed 4 science labs that were real labs. I'd prefer real to virtual, but it's worth looking at.

    Thanks!! Some great leads!!

I couldn't find organic chem for summer or fall (only gen chems), I'll have to go back and check again.

OMGosh Tom! THOSE ARE AWESOME!! Wow, I'm wondering why on earth you would look anywhere else!? Love that site and school. Bonus- my husband's family lives in that town, so it seems like I could do my final on campus. SOLD!

Yes, I agree! They offer just about all of the pre-nursing/pre-med courses one would need, except for Physics (and maybe Calculus, for med school). It does seem a bit too good to be true, eh?

As both you and CalDog mentioned - real labs are preferable over virtual labs. However, given that these courses are being offered by a med school, I would imagine that they are of high quality. Of course, you may want to check with your school first, to make sure that they will accept these courses in transfer.

I just wish that I could rock financial aid for these courses!

Duly noted. However, Jennifer is looking to become a nurse, not a chemist. Also, these courses have been developed by a medical school, not some po-dunk community college. I would imagine that some thought has been put into the virtual labs. I do agree though - real labs (in a classroom) are preferable to virtual labs. But, not everyone has the time to take organic chem courses 3 to 4 nights per week.
