This is nothing new. Ellis has been operating with dual accreditation for quite some time.

This was new to me because their RA accreditation was awarded in 2008 and their DETC in 2009.

Do you mean the Ellis College that was affiliated New York Institute of Technology?
Ellis University Founded in Chicago, Illinois in 2008 is the successor of Ellis College of the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), but is an independent online institution and is not affiliated with NYIT.

Ellis College of NYIT (RIP) was working off of NYIT's RA until the break up.

Ellis University almost lost that RA as well for fudging the "how many student you have enrolled books). They were using Ellis College of NYIT students that elected to stay with NYIT as EU's student body. A big no no I guess, but it all worked out.

Ellis Univ hung onto their RA status, but they still have not been able to secure Title IV funding (federal student aid). They were unable to show that they are financially secure and independent enough once their finances from NYIT were untangled. The process for securing Title IV eligibility is something that can generally only be attempted once a year, and it seems unlikely that they were gain eligibility any time soon - and they are running out of money fast.

Ellis University leaders are currently shopping themselves around to new buyers, and are in contract negotiations (I don't know with whom). It's likely that before the end of 2010 you'll either see more major changes at Ellis, or it will close.

    Proceed with caution...

An anomaly, yes; however, hasn’t one of our particular applauded authorities written in the past that this [never] is the case (e.g., a RA seeking /acquiring DETC accreditation)? There’s an old cliché … never say never.

No. What was asserted is that DETC-accredited schools (almost) never go on to RA. One has.

It would be interesting to determine why they did it, what value they saw in DETC accreditation.

I speculate reasons are safety and student enrollment attracting NA graduates or NA credit holders.

1)If the RA can't be afforded due to low enrollment and if they will drop RA or RA drop them they are still NA.

    2) Additional students with NA credit can apply and be accepted on regular basis but this second reason can be achieved with RA only status as well so I think its the first reason.

Well, there is some speculation we could add to this, but given the direction of a recent thread, maybe we should just put off talking about accreditation for a while.

    Sorry, I was mistaken …

This RA to DETC example (Ellis) must be a first and only.
