Amusing if weren't so sad. I'd been talking to ABC in Tampa about a local prominent Sheriff with a fake degree from Columbia State. I'd forgotten his name, so I did a google search for the 'school' name + "Florida" and "Sheriff" and found three of them! And that, of course, is just one 'school' which probably represents less than 5% of all fake degrees, and just one state, and just one job title. Oh, my.

  2. The second one in your list seems to be a Community College instructor, not a sheriff. (There is also a deputy sheriff on the staff, but not one with Columbia State degree.)

But maybe this one will do: http://www.today.uci.edu/98ucinews/980311ss.html

    Hi John,

You posted this thread to attract me since I'm a Florida cop, eh? [IMG] [IMG]

Florida is having a giant push to require all entry-level officers to have a minimum of an Associates degree. I think this is an excellent idea, but there is a lot of resistance from the Sheriffs and the Chiefs. Their primary argument is that it will reduce their ability to "fill the ranks" (especially in rural areas).

There is also a legislative push to require all sworn officers in the rank of lieutenant and above to have a bachelor's degree. Naturally, old timers would be grandfathered in.

    FYI

  4. I missed the fact that John was looking for sheriffs in Florida. So my example doesn't count. And he's a sergeant not a sheriff anyway. But I love the example nevertheless, since he is a member of the police department at UC Irvine and getting his PhD from Columbia State. The web page says "UCI Extension is proud to recognize the outstanding efforts of those highlighted in Staff Spotlight ..."

If nothing else it will raise the maturity of the entry level officers.

Also, requiring degrees for jobs that never used to require degrees serves a far more important function by keeping teachers employed and universities flowing with students in these trying economical times.

Which again calls to mind the splendid Handelsman cartoon I used to include in my book*: The king on the balcony addressing the masses saying (in effect), "I want this to be the most educated country in the world. Therefore you are all being issued honorary doctorates."

    _________
    * Someone once challenged. I happen to own this cartoon, having bought the original artwork, with publication rights, from the artist.

Yes, the second one is a community college instructor in North Carolina. I liked the 3rd one myself where the good Lt. invited folks to send him an e-mail. Maybe a question to ask is if the department does education background checks of its employees?
    I was tempted.... :)

This would look like an excellent opportunity for Excelsior and other school to step in and help provide appropriate credentialing for qualified applicants and remove the temptation of seeking a bogus degree.

I remember that cartoon in the 12th edition. (I skipped the 13th, sorry).

Why is it not in the 14th?

If anyone is looking at receiving a degree from Saint Regis University they should contact me first. I think I made them so mad asking them questions they couldn't answer, they shut me out of their web site. John, I am thinking about pursuing this as a doctorates dissertation. What do you think?
Its like organized crime only in education fraud.

Maybe something like "Student Perspectives of Distance Learning Administrative Services."

John: Cartoon triage. Needed more space for some of that annoying text. I'd like to put both Handelsmans back in the 15th ed. (They are the only cartoons for which I actually own the rights and have the original art.)

Reckon is there any push to provide funding for compensation commensurate with the education and risk?

Massachusetts has a very generous incentive for police officers, but participation is voluntary for cities & towns. The state picks up half the cost, the city/town the other half. You can read the law at:
