    Hello
I am looking for information regarding average distance learning class size. The Connecticut University System generally has larger enrollments in degree program tracks, and smaller enrollments (8-13 students) in individual courses. Our class average overall is about 18, due to both interest and course caps.

How does this compare to other distance learning programs?

    Thanks for your replies-

I've taken DL grad classes with 3 students and with 35 students. Needless to say, teaching an online course with more than 25 students is a reach -- doable but time consuming. The most I've taught in one class has been about 26 and the only thing that kept me sane was my organizational skills. Without such attention to organizational detail in designing the course to begin with I would have been overwhelmed with that many students.

I believe in individual attention from instructors as well as "visibility" in the course on a regular basis. With that in mind, I design my courses with assignments that involve a lot of communication among students -- much of the assessment comes from demonstration of knowledge and thought processes through discussion. I do not believe that tests have any particular value in learning and prefer projects to papers -- but I will give short 200-300 word papers occasionally for a "formal" grade since those are required in most schools..
