I want to get a bachelors in cis or cs with an assoc. on the way, i live in Michigan and don't plan on leaving, if that helps. Ideally i would like to get my degree completely online. I enrolled and was accepted at bake college online and am in the works of going there, but i am becoming a little skeptical, what do people think of baker? What are some other schools that you think would fit what im looking for? Also i was hoping to take some classes at the community college, they offer online classes, if they would transfer. Thanks for your help.

    Mr Ozdak:

Well, I don't know what is the local think about degree from Baker College, especially in Michigan. I have never heard any negative about Baker College except online review CLICK HERE. As far as Computer Science major, if you have money I would recommend Florida State University. If money is an issue for you, then I would recommend University of Illinios @ Springfield.

I used to make comparison between Baker College vs Troy University vs University of Illinois @ Springfield; which at the time Florida State University has not offer BS in Computer Science. I like "University" in my diploma over "College." And I chose Troy Unviversity because I can transfer more credit from Military trainning and examinations.

So, my point is if you don't feel comfortable with a degree from Baker College, then choose state school.

Yes, most community colleges offer some online courses, so you can pick up some general educational and lower division programming / IT credits on the cheap.

When you are ready to look at finishing the bachelors degree, check out TUI University (http://www.tuiu.edu) as a good quality option at a reasonable tuition cost. Disclaimer: I have taught at the school.

Troy University's Bachelor of Science in Applied Computer Science. $220.00/credit.

I attended Troy University; when the program was named as BS in Computer Science. I am happy with my degree, and my employers never asked me whether I earned from distance learning.

Baker College's cost you $285.00 per semester hour, which is the same as UI-Springfields

    $190.00 per quarter hour x 4.5 = $855.00
    $855.00/3 = $285.00

    Baker vs Troy = Troy
    Baker vs UI-Springfield = UI-Springfield
Troy vs UI-Springfield = Troy (tuition), UI-Sprigfied (name)

lets say i go to troy university, there accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. I'm planning on staying in michigan, will this accreditation be acceptable here in Michigan. Once again thank you.

    Kizmet answered YES.

Another option is Foothill College (2+2) partners with University of Illinois - Springfield or Franklin University.

    Troy

Doing some research i have come to like troy university, so i have put baker on hold. The only thing holding me back from troy is the southern accreditation being in Michigan. While searching threw some transfer pages, i seen that most baker credits especially cis ones only transferred to electives which was odd.

I was also thinking about attending my local community college http://www.oaklandcc.edu/ $60/credit hour along side with http://vcampus.mccvlc.org/ which basically lets me attend all of the Michigan community colleges online courses for 140/credit hour.

What do you think? Reassurance about troy?

Which regional accreditor accredits a program is not as important as the fact that it is accredited by a regional accreditor. You wouldn't have any reservations about degrees from Harvard (accredited by the New England Association of Colleges and Schools) or Stanford (accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges) just because they're outside of the North Central Association territory, would you?

I agree with randyp. Regional accredidation is what matters, not which accreditor.

I would personally choose University of Illinois Springfield over Troy, simply because it is a BSCS instead of a BSACS. It seems like it would leave more doors open (if you decide to get a masters then it may be easier to get into a mscs program without requiring prerequisites). However, Troy is not a bad school. I live in south Alabama and several of my friends have attended Troy. I even went and watched their football team play in the GMAC bowl a few weeks ago.

If it means anything, I am considering starting the MSCS program at UIS this fall.

    Thanks

lol randy that makes a lot of sense i didn't think about it that way, im sure the "Harvard" label would help. I like UIS as well they have a good tuition rate for online students, but i seen something like they only add 20 students to the online programs every fall or something along those line. Seems that they have a stricter admissions process and im not a brainiac......... yet.

    Where should you go

I found somecomments about regional accreditation on this thread. I am with Troy University and we, like any regional accredited institution, will accept credit another regionally accredited university. Each institution will have a preceedure for how the student should request for transfer credit but it will be accepted from any regional accrediting agency. That is something to keep in mind. You may live in Michigan but you can have credits transferred from anywhere in the country.

The CS degree in Troy may be applied but it is still a good program. If there are any questions I could answer, let me know.

Just one thing... my Computer Science degree from Troy is lacking of Mathematics. Especially Calculus and Linear Algebra... it does hurt me when I try to apply for Ph.D degree...'cause those courses are prerequisites.
