Does anyone know what reputation the United States Sports Academy www.ussa.edu has in the sports medicine community? My brother has a niece who wants to be a sports doctor and I want to be able to give her good advice.
The school is very well run and is organized around sports education. Current Professional and College coaches and administrators are part of their alumni. The school is responsible for awarding the "Directors Cup" to colleges whose athletic programs excell. The Museum at the Academy is home to the "Outland Trophy" which is awarded to the top collegiate linemen in football.
The Master of Sports Science degree has five majors, one of which is Sports Medicine. The Doctor of Education degree is in Sports Management, but three of the courses are in Sports Medicine.
The authorities on sports medicine in the US are the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), both accredited by the NCCA. If your brother's niece wants to be a sports doctor, then the ACSM would be the place to start.
Most of the programs offered by ACSM and NASM require self-study followed by workshops and proctored exams through testing centers located in different areas across the US. I think there are international testing centers, too. Best to check into it. The NCCA is the accrediting body of the National Organization for Competency Assurance. It is the benchmark on how organizations should conduct certification. I encourage you to look into the American College of Sports Medicine, as they have enormous influence in the fitness industry and in sports medicine. Many educational programs and materials cite the ACSM as an authority, and for good reason. They are.
