The prospectus in UG mentioned that the original owner was John Bear, who has sold it to .... the present owner John Walsh for a very small amount enough to buy one perhaps two Chevrolet. But John Walsh is keeping Rolls Royce in Australia.

  2. And your point is???

Sorry, Watchdog, this is old news --- clearly outlined in the older editions of John's books.

Original 25% owner. From date of incorporation (2/2/1990) to mid June 1991.

I continue to have no problem with the academics of Greenwich, but I grow increasingly concerned about the way they are being presented and marketed.

Latest (for me) development: Here is an Email I sent yesterday to Greenwich owner John Walsh of Brannagh:
    ----------------------------------------
A reader of Bears' Guide has asked me about the National Academy of Higher Education, which is referenced on the Greenwich website, presumably as a place where students or potential students can have the Greenwich degree evaluated.

On the NAHE website, the following things are of concern to me:

    1. There is no listed street address.
    2. There is no listed telephone.
    3. While the website is registered with a Washington DC location, there is no listed telephone for them in Washington, DC.
    4. The phone number associated with the URL registration (202-987-2297) is not in service.
    5. There are at least seven "schools" on their list of affiliates that I regard as diploma mills.
    6. They are not a member of the industry trade association

I need to say that I really surprised that Greenwich has chosen an affiliation with such an organization. Is there more to them that meets my eye?

I am offering my apologies to John Walsh of Brannagh, owner of Greenwich University. I should have waited for his response to my expression of concern about the connection between GU and the National Academy of Higher Education.
    ---------------------------------
Of all the institutions listed as affiliates of the National Academy, I believe Greenwich is the only one that has an actual office building, with the actual name on it, and actual employees working inside. As I've said, publicly and privately many times, I have no problems or concerns with the legitimacy or the academics of Greenwich University.

But, as I've also said more than once in the more-than-ten-years since I left Greenwich and the state of Hawaii, I have had concerns with some aspects of the way they have marketed themselves.

John, would you be so kind as to list the seven institutions you originally referred to? I noted that one of these, Saint Regis University has Richard Hoyer associated with it and remember you referring to him in the 14th Edition. I certainly question the validity of this "institution" and wonder if you have anything further to add.

    Dear DTunnell

I'm afraid I'm going to leave that for you and others. A search for the various schools on the NAHE site, either here or elsewhere, should do the job.

There are many institutions that I would never call a "diploma mill" in a public forum, although others do so here and elsewhere.

That's why I use terms like "non-wonderful" and "dreadful" -- but even then, my most recent lawsuit (about 4 years ago) was from a school that did not like being called that, nor having their use of 4 or 5 unrecognized accreditors. Even a frivolous suit is still both expensive and depressing.

I understand, John. I appear, however, to be on the right track. I have noticed a distinct relationship between Saint Regis and AdvancedU as well as several other of the schools listed. Additionally, "Dr." Hoyer represents that he was a member of the Kennedy-Western University and also obtained a doctorate from American University of London. Its amazing how all these organizations and their personalities have a tendency to congregate. Thanks again for your reply.

You are indeed on an appropriate track.

Years ago, I actually made a rather large "family tree" diagram of the unaccredited school world at the time. As I recall, Fred Calabro, the lawyer for California Coast U established (and still runs) Kensington U. Phil Forte left Kensington to establish Pacific Western. Raymond Chasse left Pacific Western to start American Coastline and a bunch of others. Tom Lavin left (but later returned) to Kensington to start Bedford University and some others. And so on and so on. It would be a much bigger job to do this now, but it could be enlightening.

Reg Sheldrick from Newport to found Southwest.

James Cloud and others from Columbia Pacific to found Kennedy-Western.

Donald Breslow from the University of Beverly Hills to found Century.

Raymond Chasse from Pacific Western to found Summit U. and American Coastline U.

Warren Walker from Union University to found Golden State University.

Then there's people with degrees from unaccredited schools going on to found their own schools:

    N. Dalton with a doctorate from California Western to establish California Pacific University.

Eli Djeddah with a doctorate from California Pacific to establish La Jolla University.

Sheila Danzig with a doctorate from American Coastline to establish MIGS.

    I'm sure there's lots more.

After my last entry, I have compared web sites of the following organizations:
    Meridian University
    Rushmore University
    International University of Fundamental Studies
    Concordia Colleges and Universities
    AdvancedU Peer Evaluation Program
    American University of London
    All Saints American University
    American Coastline University
    Adam Smith University
    Saint Regis University
    Academic Benchmark Council

I noticed that a significant number of these organizations have back pages on their web sites which match in content and presentation. Several have a connection with Richard Hoyer. And all of them are affiliated with the National Academy of Higher Education. The Official Transcript Archive Service appears to be a favorite verification service for several of them. Certainly is difficult to locate street addresses for these folks. Makes one think they don't want to be located. Hmmmm - the thought plickens!

Didn't Dr. Danzig title her ACU dissertation,
"Toward a Pedagogy of Profit: Academics and Economics in the New 'MILL'-ennium?"

    Or was that someone else?

I actually would like to read her dissertation, assuming she even wrote one. It might give us some valuable insight into the mind that produced MIGS.
