My oral defense for the PhD is set for Thursday, Jan. 14. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers. It will be done by phone. I'm wondering what an hour-long call to S. Africa will cost :)

Roscoe: "My oral defense for the PhD is set for Thursday, Jan. 14. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers."

John: Will do. Probably wise not to do what my wife did at Vanderbilt:
Her chairman: "Marina Bear is here to defend her PhD dissertation."
Marina: "No I'm not. I am here to explain it."
Her chairman: "Well, uh, yes, OK, that is, um . . ."

Roscoe: "I'm wondering what an hour-long call to S. Africa will cost."

John: $0, if one has the Vonage World plan we've recently switched to. (The $25 a month flat rate includes unlimited calling in the US and 62 other countries including SA.)

All the best...future Dr. Roscoe :) We will all be eager to hear about your experience.

In the future, when my institution gets to the point where we have students who are defending their dissertations remotely, I will have us use a virtual classroom/webcast like Elluminate, iLinc, Winba, WebEx, which will allow the student to participate using live audio, video and sharing the desktop (e.g. PowerPoint presentations). There will be no cost to the student.

Ever wonder why the traditionalists can be seemingly adverse to DL and the ongoing advancement of learning technology resources?

    Advance Congratulations, Roscoe!

I would be curious to hear of how the defense goes. In the US doctoral system, it is often the dissertation proposal defense (following coursework and final/qualifying/comprehesive/[your nomenclature here] exams) where one is really roasted over the coals. I'm sure you'll do well.

    Peace,

    Matt

It will be 2 p.m. SA time. I think they're 7 hours ahead of me. I will check this to be sure.

  16. I hope you fail...

Doctoral studies are like side-shows. As much as I admire the flaming, sharpened, acidic, medieval sadism... it's definitely not for me.

    I'm rooting for you!
