Could anyone tell me if there is something wrong with this plan-
I want to attend an RA grad school and the one I want to attend will accept a BS from a DETC school. Why would I go to an RA BS program if I *know* I will get a MS from an RA school with a DETC BS?

  2. I would say this is an OK plan if you are close to completing your BS and if you are sure that your chosen graduate school is indeed the one you will want to attend and if you are sure that you will be admitted. But a few points to be careful about:

    • If you have a year or more to go before you get your Bachelor's, it's very possible that you'll change your mind about what you want to do subsequently. I did. In which case a DETC-accredited degree would reduce your flexibility.
    • Depending on how selective the admissions process is at your chosen grad school, you may or may not be admitted even though the school accepts DETC-accredited degrees.

Life has a way of throwing you a curve when you're expecting a fastball. There are any multitude of things that could happen....the grad school changes its administration (nd therefore its policies) before you complete your undergrad degree, your lifestyle changes suddenly, the list goes on.

There are so many inexpensive RA options available that I personally don't see the benefit of pursuing an undergrad degree through a DETC school, unless it's in an offbeat subject that's not offered by an RA school (such as those offered by American Military University).

Think of your resume as a building....you need a strong foundation, and while a DETC degree certainly won't collapse the building so to speak, having an RA undergrad degree is just one less thing to worry about.

What grad school are you wanting to attend? I'm about a year into a DETC accredited BSCS program and am at a crossroads - Throw away what I already have and go RA DL or continue and hope I can find a program that will accept it, should I decide to pursue a MS? Knowing which RA schools accept DETC degrees would help a lot.

University of Phoenix admission for grad school is "...an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited or candidate for accreditation, or approved nationally accredited college or university, or a comparable degree from a recognized institution outside the United States, and a GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) as shown on the undergraduate..."
I copied this right from the book. I also called the U of P office in Jacksonville, FL and asked if they would accept a BS from a DETC accredited school. I was told that they would have to check to see if they were on the approved list...the answer came back "YES".

    Hope this helps.

And just as emphatically, they told me "NO" when I was researching an article last fall. Go figure.
