I was thinking about taking a break from Psych and getting some masters hours in history or POLS. This way I would be able to teach more subjects. Has anyone done this ?

I have 3 areas that I teach, so yes this is possible. I have a MA in one area and 18 hours in two others. Although, I have found that trying to use the 18 hours in history is one of the most difficult areas to find work.

As far as liberal arts and humanities goes, English, Math, Sociology, Psychology are without a doubt always in demand. I guess you have to look at which classes are usually part of the general core. Undergraduate degree programs require English, Math, Science and Social Sciences as part of the general education requirement. So you might keep this in mind when deciding your other 18 graduate credits.

Currently, I teach English and ESL. I am looking into adding Communications IF I can find a cheap school where I can pick up the 18 credits. I have also considered Sociology and Psychology solely due to the demand. WNMU has a concentration in Psychology for about $500 a class. However, Amberton has some more business centered concentrations in Counseling and Business Administration which are a little over $600 a class that look interesting. I am not sure about the demand for Business Administration without an MBA.

Good luck to you and me both!

Don't forget to select something you enjoy also or else learning it will be painful and teaching it even more painful and unfair to students. I am looking at an MBA in Finance and Marketing when I complete my PhD and maybe some Sociology and Psychology classes.

This is good advice. Also, there are many schools that offer remedial classes in subjects like algebra or writing (rhetoric) and it seems that there might might be some demand for people to teach what are sometimes considered to be high school level classes in a college environment. If you enjoy the subject then it might not matter.

    Kizmet,

At my CC we would kill for more math teachers, esp. at the developmental level.
